Walks in just as the mud hit the wall next to him, splattering onto his shirt...

He scooped some mud up and threw it in the direction he guessed the splatter that hit him had come from... judging by splatter pattern and hieght on the wall he aimed to the spot he calculated the original tosser to be standing at...
