And they were off! Into space Rose piloted the shuttle craft; very carefully. Zack had no doubt that she could do it either. Now everything was going as it was suppose to, or at least he supposed. "Nice job ensign." Zack commented professionally.

"I second Cadet Syda's comment." La'Mara told Ensign Digby as she now looked to her console. She then tapped a few buttons here and there. "Any one have anything to report?" La'Mara asked as the away team was being particularly quiet. Quiet was good when needed, but they were together on a mission here; commutation was key.

Rose hadn't yet fully got the hang of flying a shuttlecraft and she dreaded what would happen should she ever be given the helm of a starship. She did manage to get a little more intuitive about the controls as they entered into the atmosphere. It was always going to shake the ship a little, but to Rose, it was all new, and it seemed like the ship shook to its core. She started breathing rapidly, almost hyperventilating, out of nervousness. "Relax, Rose," she said to herself. "Relax." She did so. "Captain," she said. "We've now entered the..."
Then the hum of the engines slowly died down and Rose started in her seat in alarm. She gasped. "What... what did I do wrong?" she said nervously. "The engines, they're powering down and I did nothing! Did I hit the wrong button?" She was almost shaking with nervousness in her seat. I knew flying this shuttle was a bad idea... now I'll surely have earned a reprimand.

Things were going along great, then suddenly: downhill. The controls on the console in front of Zack started to flicker. He tapped, trying to keep his cool. "Sensors and shields are offline!" Zack reported. He wished there was something he could do, but right now he was a little at a loss. He could not get a clear reading, but it looked like the secondary systems were starting to malfunction.

Malfunctions, flickering screens, never a good sign. Chan tried re-routing auxiliary power to shields but was unsuccessful in her several attempts. It was possible an engineer might have better luck but she did not have time to yell at the commander to get off his chair and do something useful, so instead she climbed under the console she was sitting at, opened the access panel and began tinkering with the back up systems, she had been trained for every possible problem, as part of her hazard team duties, but she never really expected this shuttle to be the thing that malfunctioned on them.
"Captain, I am attempting to jump start the back up systems now..."
In about ten seconds they would have to reboot the shuttle's main console to see if she had done it right.
"...Reboot main console in, three... two... one... reboot now!"
And now we would see what would happen at the front of the shuttle... would power stabilize and they land safely? Would everything crap out and they crash painfully? Or would they land unharmed but with no power as if some kind of miracle had occurred? Only time would tell, but they didn't have much of that left...

"We're losing altitude!" Rose said, panicking. "Oh, now what do we do?" She tried to keep focused on the console in front of her, but it was difficult. The engines were going offline and the entire power system seemed to be malfunctioning. What had she done wrong? What button had she pushed that she shouldn't have? She was sure it was all her fault.
She counted down, first slowly, then skipping a few numbers because it became too fast. Then suddenly, the engines powered up again, and the thrusters came back up. It took some time for Rose to notice, but when she noticed, she timidly maneouvered downwards to land safely. With a faint thud, the shuttle landed.
Rose turned in her seat and looked at the rest of the team. She was still almost shaking with nerves and panic. "Wh-what h-happened?" she said.

Sparks flew a bit before Crewman Chan got them together enough for Rose to land the shuttle. Once down La'Mara swerved in her seat. "Well, that was fun." She commented lightly, trying to break any tension or unease anyone might be feeling. "Looks like there was something in the atmosphere we didn't account for, but you did an excellent job bring us down. And Chan, nice work." La'Mara then stood.
"Is anyone injured?" She asked concerned for her crew. If no one was injured then it might be wise to conduct repairs; if possible, try and contact the Orion, then branch out. A few little bumps was not enough to abort the mission: in her opinion.

Christian braced for impact as Rose's countdown neared zero, but the impact was only minimal. "Ouch," he said. That would be a slight bruise: his leg had hit the console in front of him. "Not much," he reassured La'Mara.
"So, let's do what we came to do, shall we?" Christian proposed, looking at La'Mare to give the order.

"We're losing altitude! Oh, now what do we do?"
System reboot...
"Wh-what h-happened?"
that was a really good question...
"Well, that was fun."
Chan felt like smacking the captain for that remark, if this was her idea of fun Janet never wanted to see her idea of torment...
"Looks like there was something in the atmosphere we didn't account for, but you did an excellent job bring us down. And Chan, nice work."
"Thanks." She grumbled as she began climbing back out of the access hatch.
"Is anyone injured?"
"Not much,"
Speak for yourself she thought as she slid slowly back into her seat, she had minor burns on her hands and some cuts on her face, they probably hurt worse than they are she reminded herself. She checked to see how bad he was cut and her hands came away from her head with blood on them, but she couldn't tell if it was from her head or her hands, when the system came back on the jolt had thrown her against the hull and snared her in some wires and other things inside the small hole she had been working in. She also decided she would let the engineer handle that work the next time.
"Only some superficial lacerations back here, I should be fine."
She said as she pulled out a medical kit from under the seat next to hers, she scanned herself with the medical tricorder and attempted to administer first aid on herself but the pain in her hands was to much...
"I could use a hand or two bandaging myself though."

"Commander, organize everyone while I help Chan with her wounds." La'Mara instructed Christian with a soft spoken tone. This matter called for calmness. Clear thinking. La'Mara reached Chan and took the tricorder and gave her a scan; just in case. One of the previous hosts had been a doctor. She just wanted to make certain nothing got missed.
"Looks like you'll have to deal with a slight headache, but it should go away on it's own. Some tenderness in your hands will have to be dealt with too. I'm sorry." La'Mara said as she folded the medical tricorder, putting it away. It was likely the woman before her pinned blame for this whole thing. She was the captain after all. She then took a wipe from the pack, and commenced to wiping the blood off Miss Chan so she could know the proper place to run the dermal regenerator over.

La'Mara didn't need to tell Christian twice that he should organise everyone. In fact, he was grateful that she put him in charge and went to treat Chan herself: he still hadn't fully recovered from what had passed between them on the Holodeck and the implications it might have for both. "Yes ma'am," he said. "Okay, gather round everyone. You too, Mr Romilly." He singled out Hector for special treatment because he was important to getting out of here, but more importantly, because he could see the Chief Engineer not listening to a word of what he said.
"I know we reviewed the original arrangements on the Orion," he said somewhat superfluously. "But as you all know, circumstances have changed. Zack, Rose, you two go and do what you came for: check out the ruins. S'Louk, you go with them." He smiled at them reassuringly. "Now for the resource gathering," he continued. "We'll have to call that off until we have re-established contact with the Orion. I know a thing or two about Operations- Mr Romilly, you'll work with me to find a way to re-establish contact and see what we can do about this thing in the atmosphere that cuts our power."
He went over extra precautions. "Okay, we're vulnerable now," he said. "We've got no contact with our ship. That means all of you need to be extra careful: keep an open commlink to us at all times."
"Time to get going," he said with a grin. "I don't fancy sleeping on a shuttlecraft, so let's make sure we get out of here before nightfall." He stood up and walked over to where he would begin the first step of dealing with the atmospheric conditions.

Hector was thrown back in the collision, and then forward rapidly -- his face hit the console hard, and his nose burst and bled. It was the extent of his injuries. He shook it off and pressed his sleeve under it for a moment, scowling. At first he was convinced the idiot at the helm had caused the crash, but it became swiftly apparent this was not the case. He should have paid more attention to his instincts. There was a reason the transporters had been unusable, and he had shrugged off his normal suspicions on the basis of what? Scans?
No. On the basis of being distracted by a certain woman, he thought, with a sinking feeling. Hector was many things, he could be childish, rebellious, and stubborn -- but in an emergency, being an engineer took precedence. For once he didn't need to be told twice.
"Could be the engines themselves," he said. "Landing procedure requires a certain amount of the external planetary atmosphere pass through them; like an old carburetor. There's no way to keep it from doing that, but I might be able to design some sort of rudimentary filter, if I knew what it was I was filtering."
His tone was clipped, and he did not append the information with the customary 'sir' Hughes was entitled to, but he was serious and attentive, and no longer sulking openly -- and that was the very best he would get.

Christian did not expect Hector to better his life in the course of a single crash, so he didn't pay much attention to his tone beyond making a mental note to have a serious discussion about it once they were back on the Orion.
"Could be the engines themselves," "Landing procedure requires a certain amount of the external planetary atmosphere pass through them; like an old carburetor. There's no way to keep it from doing that, but I might be able to design some sort of rudimentary filter, if I knew what it was I was filtering."
Exactly what I needed to know. "Ah, the bird in the jet engine, so to speak," he said with a chuckle, referring to 20th century aviation. "As for the nature of our 'bird', we can get to know more." He went over to the sensors array and operated it. The readings were inconclusive. "Inconclusive," he said. "It's too high up in the atmosphere to scan from here."
He thought for a while. "Our engines have been functioning since we cleared the upper atmosphere," he said. "Do you think we could safely take the Paris up and scan it from up close?"

While everyone was taking care of everything Zack got up and went over to Rose, who must be feeling pretty awful about the whole thing. "Hey," Zack said softly. "are you alright?" He extended a hand to help her out of the pilots seat. They had a job to do. Her, S'Louk (who had been quiet through the whole thing), and him. First though, before following any orders Zack thought it'd be best to check on her. Rose had been nervous about flying in the first place.

Rose had found it difficult to focus on the Commander's orders. Her mind drifted constantly to Chan's injury and the loss of control in the upper atmosphere. It was all her fault; she was simply a rubbish flier and she knew that she had done something wrong, whatever the others might say. After hearing Commander Hughes, she just sat in her chair, staring and close to tears, when Zack came towards her and extended a hand to help her out of the pilot's seat.
She took it, still close to tears. He asked softly if she were alright. She just nodded. It was a lie, and he probably knew it. Rose's self-confidence had taken a serious blow and she was blaming herself for all that had happened. Deep down, she was glad about Zack's concern for her. "I... well...," she started. Then she couldn't keep up face anymore and tears welled up in her eyes. "It's my fault," she said softly. She hoped he'd tell her that it wasn't true, but didn't expect he would.
