Rathren The Rathren are a humanoid alien species native to the Delta Quadrant's Rathr Sector. They were first encountered by the Federation starship Orion when they were sucked into a wormhole. Most curious about the Rathren is their large nose and their strong sense of smell, which enables them to communicate by means of scents in lieu of body language. They have been in the Alpha Quadrant by means of a wormhole known as the Portal. (Orion: Two Arrivals) 1. FactsheetFirst Contact: 2391 by the USS Orion Homeworld: Rathr Relations with Federation: Friendly Technology: Warp level Leadership: Rathren Grand Circle, led by Elder Guide S'bos 2. Appearance and PhysiologyThe Rathren are notable for their large noses, which take the form of large nostrils and a bulging nasal bridge. This nose gives them a strong sense of smell which serves as a means of communication: the Rathren have no facial expressions or body language, and instead use these smells, which are produced by a process similar to human sweating. The scents created by this process are too complex for a human nose to fully smell, and can have meanings quite as complex. Rathren skin usually has a reddish complexion, and they are heavier-built than most humans. (Orion: Two Arrivals) 3. History, Tech, Society and Culture3.1. HistoryAccording to Elder Guide S'bos,, the Rathren were once hunters, and their strong sense of smell dates from that period in their evolution. They have, according to the Elder, "since moderated their ways", and have become more peaceful as they grew more sophisticated. The Rathren are warp-capable explorers and have made use of their knowledge of space exploration to fly to other worlds much like humans do. Somewhere in the past, they discovered the stable wormhole they refer to as the Portal, which carried them into the Alpha Quadrant where they first observed the Federation and, according to Guide Yenos, "smelled that they had no ill-intent". In 2391, they encountered the USS Orion, which had arrived through the Barzan Wormhole. (Orion: "Two Arrivals") 3.2. TechnologyThe Rathren are warp-capable, and although they do not have the same capabilities as the Federation has in terms of power output, their vessels are smaller and lighter, enabling them to move at a similar speed. This also allows them to use the Portal Wormhole, whereas the Federation ships are too large and heavy to safely make it through. The Rathren ships have weapons, but they are not often used because of their preference for diplomacy. (D1: "Bridgehead"; Orion: "Two Arrivals") 3.3. Society and CultureRathren Society is peaceful and well-ordered. Their culture is devoid of the concept of individual leadership. Evolved from the sense of smell that allowed complex communication between hunting Rathren packs, the Rathren leadership is collective, and vested in Circles of coequal members. A Circle is headed by a Guide or a Speaker, who speaks on its behalf and is considered the guardian of its wisdom, generally the wisest among it by consensus. Nevertheless, it is the Circle that makes the decision and has the quality of leadership. All segments of Rathren society, from starships to communities, are governed by Circles. The Circles stand in a hierarchical relationship with the body known as the Grand Circle, composed of Elders who are considered the wisest among the Rathren. Its Guide, currently Elder Guide S'bos, is the titular leader of the Rathren people and carries political, diplomatic and spiritual authority. (Orion: "Two Arrivals") 4. Background and Developer's NotesThe Rathren were created by Marty as part of the Two Arrivals plot, as a race which would be the first encountered in the Delta Quadrant by the Orion. The development of the Portal as a means of transport was devised to give an early way to transport officers off and onto the ship. Its later use in the plot of Delta One also fits into this category. To hint at this, the Rathren were designed to have "smelled" the Federation and concluded they were peaceful. As they were the ones who gave the Federation permission for the construction of Delta One, they are to play a large plot in Delta One.

Species Name: Matelian Home planet:
Features & Biology: Their first appearance is that of purple skin, a few scales, white hair, and yellow cat shaped eyes. The garments are quite festive looking. The women are scantly dressed and the men just have shirts and baggy floods. Harmless looking. The women, however, can turn from the pleasant looks to that of a more insect looking creature standing about seven to eight feet tall. In regard this species is much like insects and a few animals when it comes to mating practices: the men fight to gain favor of the female. The heart; or hearts are located on their left side. They have two stomachs. Yellow blood.
Talents & Beliefs: No belief system, but they are quite technologically advanced, but don't show it off, as their city streets show nothing of technology, but more arts and crafts.
