Returning to Ops from his tour of the station with Celeste, Lieutenant Browning and Lieutenant Jethro and joined by Magnus Wilson, the Security Chief, Art made straight for the spiral staircase that led up to the Observation Lounge, located next to the turbolift. Coming up the stairs, he could already see into space above him, a preview of the amazing vista that he had already praised about the Observation Lounge. It was even better than the Promenade.
If the preview was wonderful, the whole room was breathtaking. It was as much glass as it possibly could be, with a domed ceiling. Looking down out of the windows, they could see the habitat ring below them, a spectacular view of the station they were now on top of. In the middle of the Observation Lounge was an elliptical briefing table as seen on many Starfleet vessels, large enough for the senior staff to sit around. On one wall, it had a private replicator and a sort of bar for private celebrations of the Station's staff. Art also knew that for large conferences, there were also tables they were able to extend from the floor.
For now, they weren't needed. This was a briefing, not a conference. Art walked over to the head of the table. I'd rather have a round one, he thought. Makes it all less hierarchical and it would fit in better with the scenery. Maybe I'll get one. He seated himself in the comfortable seat, leaning back nonchalantly. "Lady, gentlemen, pray be seated," he said, smiling and gesturing them to take their seats.

Magnus came trotting in behind Arthur casually and then saw this glorious view. He whistled only after he caught his breath from gasping. He nodded his head approvingly. He took a good look around and saw the table and could help but think it would look much better if it was round. He then chuckled quite audibly because his mind turned to an old earth fairy tail of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.
"Lady, gentlemen, pray be seated."
"Oh yes great King Arthur, let your will be done and I your arm." Magnus said laughing now holding his stomach from such hearty laughter as he was seated. He had hoped that someone, anyone would get his reference, though probably not. Not in this century. Oh well, that happens. Some jokes win, others are sent out the nearest airlock.

Arthur laughed at Magnus's joke. It seemed like the Security Chief could read his mind, but he was sure that was not included in the eye's specifications, much to his relief. It was simply a marvellous coincidence. He probably had a second opinion to reference for making the adjustments to the layout of the Observation Lounge.
"It would be my pleasure, Sir Magnus," said Arthur in a voice that he tried to make sound regnal and dignified. Then he switched to a more casual attitude. "We really ought to make this table round. We'd be Commander Arthur and the Officers of the Round Table." He chuckled.

The view and room were quite lovely. Had Starfleet hired an interior decorator for the project? Before Celestia could take in any more Arthur and Magnus started talking about knights, and round tables. Celestia looked at each with a somewhat perplexed look. "You two gone off your rocker?" That was the polite way of asking someone if they were crazy. The whole joke and such just zoomed completely over her head. Perhaps it was because she didn't read a lot of Terran books.
Round, rectangular. What did it matter so long as they had a table? Celesta lightly shook her head. "Nevermind." She said simply, pulling her chair out and sitting down. "So, what is it we are to be briefed on?"

"How incredibly eerie. Its like you read my mind. Like exactly what I was thinking? Even more eerie is that you got my reference, what kind of a freak are you?" Magnus said with nothing but jest in his voice as if the smile he wore would not have been enough to ease and confirm that he was joking. "Though I will admit, you and a cape and tights...." He had to cover his mouth to stifle his laughter.
"So, what is it we are to be briefed on?"
Magnus then stopped smiling...for a few seconds and became a bit more serious. Though he still wore a charming smile. It was time to work he guessed. Oh well. He knew how to his job, and he would do it well, especially with his new eye, was amazing. I wonder how much gold pressed latinum I could get for it? He looked from Arthur to Celeste.

"Lady, gentlemen, pray be seated."
Sounded to Jethro like the commander was attempting something a little more theatrical than he was used to...
"Oh yes great King Arthur, let your will be done and I your arm."
It also seemed like the Security Chief was fully capable of playing along with it...
"It would be my pleasure, Sir Magnus. We really ought to make this table round. We'd be Commander Arthur and the Officers of the Round Table."
Jethro did his best not to groan at the joke made by the commanding officer. He walked over to the replicator on the wall, pressed a button and was presented almost instantly with a large cup of hot coffee, now he was ready for the briefing, if not the sense of humor he was being surrounded by.
"How incredibly eerie. Its like you read my mind. Like exactly what I was thinking? Even more eerie is that you got my reference, what kind of a freak are you? Though I will admit, you and a cape and tights...."
"You two gone off your rocker?"
It seemed the Executive Officer was not too fond of the humor either, he noticed as he leaned against the wall next to the door.
"Nevermind."
'So much for the voice of reason in here' he thought...
"So, what is it we are to be briefed on?"
'She doesn't know? Not a good sign.' he thought again. Usually the Commander and first officer knew what the first staff meeting and welcome briefing were going to be about... Jethro was wondering if it was going to be the same old thing as every other station he had served on or if due to the circumstances he was going to hear something new for a change. So far it seemed that Art was a very different kind of officer and he hadn't quiet figured him out yet.
After a while he realized they were actually going to start the briefing, which meant an end to whatever else had been happening, so he took a seat at the table, one that was across from the door so he could see who was coming or going. He hated to be caught off guard. He sat there, drinking his coffee and waiting for the nitty gritty to happen...

The joke about the tights and cape really embarrassed Arthur like it shouldn't have in front of his fellow officers, so he went on the defensive and cut the discussion short, reinforced by Celeste. "That's enough, Lieutenant," Arthur said, rather annoyed, indicating clearly that Magnus had crossed the line. "We'll continue our discussion of Arthurian epics later." He looked at his fellow officers assembled around the table. Several of the others had come in too. "Now, it's briefing time."
Celeste revealed she didn't know the mission. Arthur found that remarkable, but then the circumstances were: after all, she had had a father to grieve for, and had stated to him that the mission was not her motivation, but her personal loyalty to him. It flattered him, but that was not the point. "Right," he said. "Welcome to Delta One. Now you've all been briefed on the Bridgehead Project in advance of your transfer here, so I'll not talk about that. Suffice to say we're in the final stages of the build and we'll be overseeing that. The Rathren Elder Guide and a delegation are coming over to welcome us in the next few days: suffice to say I'd like to have the station shipshape by then."
He continued to state his vision of command to the rest of them. "Now, a few personal words," he said. "As some of you may have already noticed, I tend to be a little more casual about things. What's important to me is getting the job done as a team, and I am no less a part of that team than any of you. A good working relationship is important to me." He thought for a while whether he'd say this or not. "As friends, we can achieve our mission goals."
He hoped he hadn't ridiculed himself and been resolute. After all, despite his confidence, this was his first briefing as Commanding Officer.

"Now, it's briefing time."
As my mother would say: Thank the prophets.
Celestia listened as Arthur spoke. It finally clicked in her head; well about the Rathren anyway. She had been there for the hail. The others hadn't been so obviously they wouldn't know that bit of information. He then went on to his command style. Celestia was already used to it from years past. Though she was not quite sure how the other officers would take it. More specifically their Intel. officer. They had a different rule book to start with, now it changed, sort of due to the mission. They'd all just have to simply take a rule from the Borg and adapt.
Oh! "Does, everyone know how the Rathren differ in commutation?" It was something important to know; at least Celestia thought it was. They communicated emotions with smells. So even if you were smiling, but cursing on the inside it was likely that they'd know.

"That's enough, Lieutenant. We'll continue our discussion of Arthurian epics later."
Guess the line had been locate, Jethro took a mental note of that as he took another sip of coffee.
"Now, it's briefing time."
'Could have sworn that particular alarm had gone off down in the Promenade...' He thought as the Commander got ready for the briefing.
"Right, welcome to Delta One.
'So I finally get to meet the Rathren in person, interesting.' Was his thought after the first part of the brief. He was still unsure how to handle their unique form of communication.
"Now, a few personal words, as some of you may have already noticed, I tend to be a little more casual about things. What's important to me is getting the job done as a team, and I am no less a part of that team than any of you. A good working relationship is important to me. As friends, we can achieve our mission goals."
So it was going to remain a casual environment, maybe he wouldn't bother getting more than one uniform altered, it would save time if he didn't need to wear one for anything other than special occaisons...
"Does, everyone know how the Rathren differ in communication?"
Something he knew the answer too already.
"I might be able to help there..." He said as he leaned forward slightly and set his cup on the table.
"They have larger noses than most humanoid species and can smell emotional changes or deceit. At the same time they emit strong fragrances when they speak. As Lt. Mishtak, Security Chief of the Orion, put it in his report, 'It can be quiet overwhelming and unexpected.' which I think sums it up fairly well."
He hoped no one actually read Mishtak's report for it was not really that nice, he had been on edge the entire time and his report showed that in detail. He much preferred the reports of the rest of the away team and the Captain in particular as she was able to explain their communication type as well as a bit of their government setup. The were run by a council of elder guides, though Guide seemed to be a name given for many positions.
"One more point of interest, their leaders are known as Elders, Guides and Elder Guides. Guide seems to be a tittle with many meanings such as leader, captain and a host of others. Perhaps after our meeting with them we will have a better understanding of their society."
He reclined into his seat again and picked up his cup, sipped again and waited for the meeting to continue...

Magnus stopped joking when Arthur went more serious but brushed off his annoyance like it was nothing, if he got annoyed over something that little...maybe he belonged in tights then. Sheesh oh peets, what is he a girl? Magnus shook his head and chuckled at himself. He then listened to Arthurs briefing and to what their intel officer had to say about there scent and sense of smell. He smirked then as he had read Lieutenant Mishtak's report and he was far less friendly Nice tact Woods, well played. Just then Magnus decided to speak up.
"I concur with everything woods said. They seem to be a peaceful people, given there strong sense of smell more than likely herbivores. Though that is only a guess. Who knows they could be savage, voracious carnivores that slowly digest their prey over a thousand years. Though that to quote Vulcans is illogical and unreasonable. Speaking of them being peaceful, that is something that vexes me as Chief of Security. How is a seemingly pacifistic race supposed to aid us if we are attacked? In such a case I would advise us getting our own defenses as soon as possible." Magnus then scratched his head thinking if there was anything else he wanted to add and shook his head then smiled at the others.

"I might be able to help there..."
Celestia's eyes moved to look directly at Woods. Should I not be surprised? She asked herself in thought as she just simply listened to what the man had to say. If there was one thing Celestia had done for certain was memorize the race that they'd be interacting with, as well as ones they might be around. So yes, she knew. She had only asked to see if anyone else did, and apparently at least two others of the senior staff did.
"I wouldn't go that far Lieutenant." Celestia said as she turned her attention to Wilson. "Just because a race is peaceful does not make them to be pacifists. One never knows what kind of teeth an animals has and will use until backed into a corner."

Arthur listened to the conversation about the Rathren unfold. It was a little curious. He had read Lieutenant Lisa Huygens' report on the Rathren and they certainly were not pacifists, even though they were peaceful. "Commander Milos is right," he said. "Besides, it's in the report. The Rathren communicate by... sweating. It's to them what body language is to us."
"Besides, Mr Wilson, the station is armed," he said. "We won't need the Rathren until we need to chase ships off." That was settled, then.
"If everyone knows what they got to do," he concluded, "I'm sure we'd all like some off-duty time to do whatever we please. If there are no further questions, let's get going." Shall I tell them? "I'm going to Cadfael's. Get some of his synthale."

And the very first briefing was over. Hopefully every officer got all they wanted to out in the open. If not, they could ask later or after. Art had said 'if there are no further questions'. Or find the answer themselves. Personally Celestia hadn't much to say or ask during the briefing. All that needed to know got said. In her opinion.
"I'm going to Cadfael's. Get some of his synthale."
And I'm going too...but not for the synthale. Well she had said that she'd be back; not just for dinner either.
Celestia smiled at Arthur as she stood from her seat.

Jethro listened as Magnus agreed with him, but felt a sudden urge to smack the man on the back of the head when he mentioned his theory on the Rathren being pacifists. Lt. Huygens had reported that their ships seemed quite capable of defending themselves should the need arise...
"I wouldn't go that far Lieutenant. Just because a race is peaceful does not make them to be pacifists. One never knows what kind of teeth an animals has and will use until backed into a corner."
He didn't know if she had read the reports or not but it certainly appeared she knew what she was talking about...
"Commander Milos is right, besides, it's in the report. The Rathren communicate by... sweating. It's to them what body language is to us."
A well read commanding officer, Jethro was glad of that. He'd been stationed on other assignments where the commander was nothing more than a figure head and he hated those assignments. At least here he seemed to have gotten lucky with the command staff, they all seemed to know what they were doing so far...
"Besides, Mr Wilson, the station is armed. We won't need the Rathren until we need to chase ships off."
Jethro knew the station had it's own weapon systems, though learning they did not have their own fleet of runabout's or Defiant class defense ships made him wonder how safe this post was really going to be.
"If everyone knows what they got to do. I'm sure we'd all like some off-duty time to do whatever we please."
I for one need to locate a uniform, he thought at the mention of free time...
"If there are no further questions, let's get going."
He looked around and took another sip of coffee, it was getting dangerously low...
"I'm going to Cadfael's. Get some of his synthale."
I wonder if that old guy has anything that'll pass for a good bourbon, may as well head over there after I find that uniform, he decided as Miss Milos stood from her seat, he assumed that meant the meeting was adjourned but remained behind to finish his coffee...

Apparently, not everyone had got the hint that the briefing was over. "Well, off you go," said Arthur pleasantly. "Briefing adjourned." We owe it to ourselves to take some time off. I'll go to see how Cadfael is doing. Arthur rose from his seat and made for the turbolift, ordering it to go to the Promenade.
End Arthur - Move to the Portal Inn
(OOC: The plot will continue on the next day IG, which I will announce to you once you've had some time off. This is character development time, folks.)
