Charity had gotten up early, from a rather restless night to say the least. A few odd things had been happening to her over the past couple of weeks. Sleepiness, restlessness, ups and downs with mood, etc.
Normally she would have sought help much earlier than this if the symptoms didn't seem so minor, but the fact that they hadn't gone away by now...well, Charity decided it was time to seek some help. So, it was off to the stations infirmary.
Which after about twenty minutes she finally arrived. "Ding! Ding!" Charity said imitating a reception desk bell, as she also did the tapping motion.

Elaine was having a pretty boring time in Sickbay. At first, she'd found it relaxing: having delivered her comment on her brother's latest date (which she knew for what it was even though he protested) with Commander Milos, even though one would do better delivering it to a wall, had tired her a bit. As the hours of her shift passed by with just a few bruises to treat (which she gratefully took from the medics to do herself), she was watching the time intently, desparate for her shift to get over.
Then somebody imitated a bell. "Coming!" said Elaine, hoping it wasn't the latest of Lieutenant Browning's men with bruises. In fact, it was not: standing there was Charity Andrews, Science Officer. "Come in, Lieutenant," she said, motioning the woman in. "What seems to be the matter?"

Charity walked on in. What seems to be the matter... Well, what wasn't would be more so the question to ask. Charity simply hopped up on one of the beds to get off her feet, which were killing her, and she hadn't even been on them for that long. "Well doc, normally I wouldn't be here as the symptoms are so incredibly minor, but whatever it is has been going on for about two or three weeks, so here I am!" Now to list the symptoms. Charity leaned back on her hands, getting a bit more comfortable.
"Okay. Symptoms. Sleepiness even after a good solid eight hours, then restlessness, headaches, which like are practically unheard of right? Then there's achy feet even if I have not stood on them; way weird. Nausea, and mild weight gain. Oh! And I'm starting to constantly crave Vulcan spice tea, which I've never liked."

If I didn't knew better, it'd almost be sounding as if she's... Elaine thought, then realised that she didn't know yet. "Well, let's get you examined, shall we?" she said cheerfully, happy to get some rather more serious symptoms instead of those constant bruises of not-too-careful Engineers. Waiting for Charity to sit on a biobed, she got her Medical Tricorder out.
"You say these symptoms were rather minor?" she asked. "Have you been having them for a while?" In the meantime, she configured the tricorder to the right sensor, but waited for Charity's answer before she started scanning.

How far back? Charity thought for a moment. "Oh, about a few weeks or so." Charity lightly shrugged. "Maybe I should have come in sooner, but I thought they'd go away on their own. I mean it's not like I'm dying or anything right? Just mild discomfort stuff. No cookie tossing or dizziness."
Charity waited for the doc to scan her. It had to be nothing, right? Maybe a slight touch of the Trakilian flu or something...

"The Blood"
A young medical assistant came in to the infirmary with a body on a portable table. He escorted it over into the back of the medical area, into a cold storage room where any deceased individuals would be brought for final examination, as this one was being brought in for. The person on the slab had been a diplomat from the Republic of D'medi and had been assassinated on the station not very long ago.
"Doctor, I could use your expertise over here. Until you are clear I'll just use the EMH program." Turning back into the closed area "...Computer, activate EMH."
"Please state the nature of the medical emergency."
"Doctor, I have the body of a male delta quadrant resident. I estimate time of death to be around ten in the morning by Earth standard time, do you agree?"
The EMH picked up a tricorder and began scanning the body, after the entire body had been scanned the doctor looked at the assistant with a puzzled look.
"I can do nothing for this man, he is dead. I'm a doctor not a mortician, nor am I a coroner. Please have this body examined by a member of the proper medical field."
The EMH program then deactivated, leaving the assistant alone with the body. Now what was he supposed to do, report to security that a hologram gave him the brush off? No way...
He walked back out to where Dr. Ashbury was speaking to another officer he didn't recognize...
"Excuse me Doctor, I don't mean to intrude but the EMH is giving me a hard time, could you sign this..." He held up a PaDD for her to sign for the body. "...Then it's all yours to get to whenever you can."
He stood by patiently waiting for the signature so he could take off, he liked working with people, but he preferred them to be alive when he saw them.

Scan at 95%... "Excuse me Doctor, I don't mean to intrude but the EMH is giving me a hard time, could you sign this..." He held up a PaDD for her to sign for the body. "...Then it's all yours to get to whenever you can." Elaine was a bit annoyed, as she had to interrupt the scan. Can't he see I'm... "What is it, Commander?" she asked. Looking over the PaDD, Elaine looked at Jethro. "I'm a doctor, not a coroner."
"Well, here you go," she said, signing it. The dead diplomat she knew of: Arthur had talked about the incident before he went to the Holodeck with Commander Milos. Typical Arthur: at a time like this, he still stuck to his dates and attempts to charm women. This is -too- interesting. "Well, shall we continue the scan, Lieutenant?" she asked Charity, getting out her tricorder again.
"Let's see..." she mumbled, looking over the data after the scan was completed. "It's not a virus, that's for sure. Then what is it?" She thought for a while, going over the facts, looking at the womb area in particular to see if her first instinct was indeed correct. The signs were pointing to it, but something was off. It irritated Elaine that she couldn't exactly put her finger on what it was. It showed on her face but didn't enter into her voice as she stated her diagnosis. "Could be a pregnancy of about 4 weeks. Do you think that might be it?" She asked.

During the middle of the scan an officer came up to the doctor here, and wanted her to sign something because the EMH was giving a tude. Charity almost burst out laughing. She did lightly giggle when the line 'I'm a doctor, not a coroner' was said. I'm a doctor not a...fill in the blank! It was funny.
"By all means." Something was bothering the good doctor. Plain as the look on her face. Then a slap in the face! "Pregnancy?" Charity said sounding a bit stunned. "Uh..." She thought back. "Well, I did mate with a Vulcan. He's dead now, but I didn't think...I mean..." What in the blue blazes do I mean?!
"The odds..." They were 100 to 1. Of course Charity usually did land the long shots.

A Vulcan, huh? Elaine thought, her thoughts arriving at a single unpleasant conclusion. I'd best be honest with her, then. "The odds indeed," she said earnestly. "But not in a way you think. It seems you are pregnant, Lieutenant. The odds that are slim, however..." She stopped, looking for a way to break this to her patient.
"... I mean, your mate had copper-based blood and yours is iron-based," she explained, trying to avoid the issue. "Which means, unfortunately, that unless we come up with a way to overcome that difficulty, your baby may not survive." It wasn't pleasant and the concern was showing on Elaine's face, but there was also determination there.
"But I won't let that happen," she said reassuringly, laying her hand reassuringly on her patient. "No way."

Charity listened very carefully. The news she had gotten; well it just blew her away! Not survive?! Her face then turned to one of slight puzzlement. Her brow furrowed and eyes drifted to the side. Charity then blew a piece of her bangs to the side. "Question." Charity said as her eyes drifted back to Elaine. "If our blood is not compatible then how could a child be conceived in the first place?" Random thoughts. Common occurrence.
"I know you won't." Charity said getting back on track. "And I'm not going to worry." Charity said casually as she waved a hand to the side, palm down. "Can any of these replicators make a hot fudge sundae?"

As she waited for the doctor to answer her question. Her first question, a medic came by and brought her a hot fudge sundae. Apparently he had over heard and wanted to do something. "Thank you." Charity said to the medic, giving him a nod and a smile. Eating for two...hopefully... Charity thought as she lifted the spoon full of ice cream to her mouth and began to slowly eat it.

"Question." "If our blood is not compatible then how could a child be conceived in the first place?" "Very good question," said Elaine. "There've been a few Vulcan-Human hybrids. The gene structure is compatible, but as soon as blood flow is going to build up, things can go horribly wrong. So it's possible to conceive, but we've got to make sure that there's either iron or copper-based blood running through those vessels."
She felt the need to strike a more optimistic tone. "Luckily, it's not the first case. As you'll recall, the galaxy-famous Spock was half-Vulcan, and so there have been a few more cases over time. I'll study them."
"Needless to say, I want you to report to the Infirmary every day. See if everything's okay."

got to make sure that there's either iron or copper-based blood running through those vessels... Charity repeated in her mind. How would one do that? It was a bit of a mystery to Charity how to do that. "How do you know what blood is better?" Charity looked a tad perplexed. "What about the baby's brain?" So many questions there were to ask. Perhaps I should pray to the deities more often.
"That true!" Charity replied optimistically.
"Needless to say, I want you to report to the Infirmary every day. See if everything's okay."
"Everyday?" Charity echoed. "You're the doc, but we don't have to tell anyone about this yet, do we?"
