"Bridgehead"
In the brand new and empty Command Module, Commander Arthur Ashbury emerged from the turbolift and, with a smile, walked around his new Command Center. He had been in Ops daily before, at DS4 and DS3, but this was different. It wasn't just that it looked different: it was his own Ops, and he was now in command. The large domed walls opened up into space, making for a pretty amazing view that made him wonder what things would look like in the Observation Lounge.
Everything had been built according to the Federation standards he was accustomed to, but with state-of-the-art technology. The command table that dominated the middle contained the latest schematics and, with a tap of a button, revealed a wealth of information in stunning detail. A large viewscreen hung on the wall opposite his Command Chair, ready to make visual contact with anything.
But what was better than visual contact on screen was the real deal. Art paced over to the windows, standing for a while gazing out into the vast expanse of the Delta Quadrant. All around the station, a few of the habitat modules were still being towed in, and the air was abuzz with crews making the final stages of the build. The final frontier, he thought. "And we're here..." he said aloud, dreaming of what lay ahead.

Well this was it. She was here. And, the best part of all was that new adventures awaited! Celestia walked around for a bit, looking at a few things. Certainly is clean. She thought as she ran a finger across one of the consoles. Wonder how long the new smell will last? Celestia lightly shrugged to herself. Then low and behold; a voice. "And we're here..."Oh look. It's 'what's his name'? Celestia went around and silently approached her commanding officer from behind. She figured it be alright since they had served together before. "Guess who?" Celestia said as she gently covered Commander Ashbury's eyes with her hands. Tag: what's his name?

Suddenly, Arthur saw only black before him. Of course, this was because two hands of somebody behind him covered his eyes. "Hey!" he exclaimed, rather pleasantly but with a mock hint of irritation. "Whoever you are, I order you to uncover my eyes!" He couldn't help laughing. His first joke in command of Delta One had been made.
Now to see who he gave the 'order' to. He turned on his feet and looked right into the face of Celestia Milos, his Executive Officer. He had hand-picked her because he knew he could rely on her: they knew eachother from their time on the Kirk. "Miss Milos," he said pleasantly, smiling charmingly at her. "You sure have a strange way of reporting to duty. Welcome to Delta One."

"Aye skipper." Celestia said holding in a laugh, but smiling as she uncovered Arthur's eyes. She watched as he turned around. There was not much else she could do but watch. He looked at her, Celestia looked right back at him. Her first thought on seeing his face again was that he hadn't seemed to age. Still looked the same. Smile that could melt the iciest of hearts.
"What can I say? I like strange." Celestia replied. "Maybe that's why were not enemies." She suggested with a light laugh. "And thank you. So, mind if I ask what you've been up to since I last saw you?"

"Skipper?" he asked with a light frown. "I'm not on any ship that I know of." He chuckled.
"What can I say? I like strange." "Maybe that's why were not enemies." "And thank you. So, mind if I ask what you've been up to since I last saw you?" They were laughing pleasantly together, like old friends. "Yes, you were always a woman for strange, Celeste," he said, using her nickname. "That means you must be in your element here in the Delta Quadrant."
She asked him what he was up to since they last spoke. He thought she meant what he had done since he had been reassigned from the Kirk. They had seen eachother before the mission had begun, when Arthur personally requested her as his First Officer. "Oh, nothing really," he said nonchalanty. "Just working my way up to follow in my father's footsteps and command a station." He smiled another time.
"And you? What have you been up to between me leaving the Kirk and this, our happy reunion on the other side of the galaxy?"

"My mistake then." Celestia replied with another smile. "You know that I've never served on a station before. I've never even spent any of my shoreleave time on one. Just starships, and planets." Hey, it was the truth. This was the first station Celestia had ever set foot on. She was different from other officers in that respect. Celestia could always be found on a beach; well alright, the ocean or lake of a beach; when on leave.
"That means you must be in your element here in the Delta Quadrant."
"I'm not quite sure about the Delta Quadrant being strange yet, but setting foot on a base definitely is." Celestia briefly looked to the floor. "Truth be told, I'm not sure if I'd taken the assignment if someone else had asked." Being this far away from home would be extremely difficult if she had to make all new friends. Not that Celestia was not good at making friends, it was the simple fact that her father had died one month ago.
"And you? What have you been up to between me leaving the Kirk and this, our happy reunion on the other side of the galaxy?"
"Well..." Celestia began as she thought of a few things. "I helped Lieutenant Steven Davis learn the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet, well alright I almost did. I walked out on practice because it was really stupid and I really hated the frilly pink puffy dress." Celestia rolled her eyes.
"So I guess my strict no ruffles policy got broken. Survived a Borg invasion, which I believe I was the only officer to think it was cool." Celestia thought a bit more. "Got into trouble, but that's not exactly a news flash, and...I broke off my engagement with Daniel Hayes three days before the wedding." Celestia had said the last part rather quickly.

"Oh really?" Art asked, surprised. How come she never served on a station before? And come to that, how come he never noticed? He had looked at her duty record several times before finally asking her, and he never noticed. Perhaps it was just because he liked her."I was born on a station, as you know. It's second nature, if not first." He smiled again.
When she suddenly started looking at the floor and told him that "Truth be told, I'm not sure if I'd taken the assignment if someone else had asked.", he put a hand on her shoulder, comforting her. "I know," he said softly. "Your father died last month. It must be hard for you to go to the other side of the galaxy." He paused. "Just know that if you need somebody to talk to, my door is always open."
The conversation soon turned to happier matters. Art soon felt Celeste and him relaxing again as she told him what she'd been up to. He laughed several times, one for imagining Celestia as Juliet in a ridiculous pink dress. But she'd look cute. The Borg invasion sounded like an adventure, but he didn't say he agreed. After all, he didn't want her to propose looking for Borg to relive the cool experience, which he fully thought her capable of.
He barely caught what she said about her wedding to Daniel. "Must be hard on Daniel," he said. "Why did you do that?" Another of his charming smiles appeared on the Commander's face.

"It can be hard. The person I worry about most though is mother, even if we never saw eye to eye, but my brothers are still back there, so things will be alright...hopefully." Even now Celestia's brothers could be a little disagreeable? Well fact is they never got along. They were all opposite.
Then he asked why she called it off. This was a tough one to answer. She already knew she could not answer it directly or straight up. Because he's not you. Heaven knows Celestia had the biggest crush on Arthur before they even spoke several years ago. Celestia looked into his eyes. "I can't marry someone I don't fully love. It wouldn't be fair, or right. Don't you agree?" That was more or less a semi-rhetorical question. "Speaking of love...did you uh find the right girl yet?"

Art comforted Celeste some more until the uneasy topic of her father's death was well behind them. There was nothing he could say, really, so he resorted to physical communication and a comforting presence.
Celestia looked into his eyes and Arthur returned the look into her brown eyes. She was a beautiful woman, and for some reason he thought he saw dreaminess in these eyes whenever they met his. Well, we'll see, he thought. Then she confessed she didn't fully love Daniel, and asked him if he didn't agree. He didn't answer.
"Speaking of love...did you uh find the right girl yet?" The question took him by surprise. He laughed. "If I had found her, I'd be holding her hand right now," he said. "Have you found a man you fully love yet, for that matter?"

"I suppose that would be true." Celestia commented lightly. Well that news was a relief. No girl. Not that Celestia wouldn't be happy for Arthur if he had found someone. Things would just be different. Of course when he asked if she had found a man she fully loved yet, Celestia kind of regretting asking Art if he found anyone.
Celestia became a little fidgety, and turned around. "Uh, well...yes." She replied softly; doing best to hide all nervousness. Thankfully she had a lot of practice with hiding nervousness. "But you know how it is." Celestia said nonchalantly.
"One might as well be invisible. And the only people that notice and chase after are ones you actually want to be invisible to." She said turning round to face him again.

Art wondered who it was who Celeste had found, and what he looked like. For the likes of Celeste, he probably couldn't be handsome enough! "Just be yourself," was all he could give her by way of advice. "He'll notice what a wonderful woman you are." He couldn't help flirting with her, and she'd probably take well to the compliment. He smiled at her.
Then the console at the Operations station bleeped. They were being hailed. "I wonder what that bleep means?" he asked. "Do you know that, miss Milos?"

"When exactly have I not been myself?" Celestia was not one to pretend she was something she was not. Well, she might if a persons life depended upon it, but that was basically it. For her things were black and white; no room for grey. More specifically, there was no grey with her. What you see is what you get.
"He'll notice what a wonderful woman you are."
"If you really mean that, then I guess there's hope." Celestia smiled. "One question though, since I didn't tell you who he was, how do you know he's in the Delta Quadrant? I've never known a person that noticed someone that was in a whole different quadrant. Ya kinda need interaction for that." As far as Celestia knew, Art didn't know she had been talking about him. Maybe down the road she'd tell Arthur she was talking about him, but not now. It was not the right time. Besides, it'd make things kinda complicated. "However, you're right. He is in the Delta Quadrant too."
Suddenly the console bleeped.
"Do I know what? The bleeping sound or your advice to be true?" Celestia twirled a strand of her red hair around a finger. "Would you mind just calling me by name, or nickname, despite regulation? And 'Miss Milos' sounds too formal. You want me to call you Mister Ashbury?"

"Is he?" asked Art suprisedly. "Then he must be a member of my crew! You're very lucky, Celesete, to be here with him. Being in the Delta Quadrant sounds like the stuff of romance." That was true, at least for him. There sure had to be nice girls on this station, like the one standing opposite him. Perhaps one of them was his lifelong partner. Until he found her, he'd enjoy being single; have the occasional date.
When he asked about the bleeping console, apparently he had not been clear. "Why, the console of course!" Then Celeste made a request to call her by name. "I'll call you Celestia, Celeste or 'Commander'," he said charmingly. "It's the right and respectful thing to do. As for you..."
"You can call me sir. Or Commander. Or Arthur. Just don't call me late for dinner." He chuckled.

"Of course! Everyone knows good romantic relationships are built on hostile forces, near death experiences, and plagues. Nothing says 'I love you' more than a solid right hook." Celestia joked. Like everyone else that read up and paied attention, she knew what Janeway and that crew went through in the Delta Quadrant. Hard times, disaster after another. But it did make the crew stronger.
"It's the right and respectful thing to do. As for you..."
No wonder I love you. Celestia almost got lost in thought for a brief moment, but was quickly snapped back by the joke. She laughed. "I won't call you late for dinner if you show up early." Celestia said with a little smirk and twinkle in her eyes. She was hoping Art would get the hint about having dinner together. It would be nice. They could catch up a bit more.

Art laughed at Celestia's joke, although he hadn't seen it coming. He had inferred that the Delta Quadrant was romantic because it was new and strange, not exactly because it was dangerous, which was true too. His 'late for dinner' joke gave Celeste an opening to what Arthur perceived to be an invitation for dinner. Well, he thought. There are worse people to have dinner with, and besides, it would strengthen the famed CO/XO relationship.
"It would be an honour if you would join me for dinner tonight," he said. "Cadfael at The Portal Inn makes good pub food, and I promised him I'd try it out sometime." He smiled.
Now to business. He walked over to the console to see what was bleeping. "Oh look," he said as he saw that it was a transmission from the Rathren. "The welcoming committee!" He touched a button to open a channel. "Good afternoon," he said in greeting. "I am Commander Arthur Ashbury, newly arrived on Delta One."
He looked at the command screen. The first thing he noticed was the large nose that was characteristic of the Rathren. The man was Elder Guide S'bos, whom he hadn't met but he'd heard the reports from Starfleet Command. He was the leader of the Rathren people. "Greetings Arthur, Commander of Delta One," he said. "I am S'bos, Elder Guide of the Rathren People. Welcome to the Delta Quadrant."
"Thank you, Elder," he said with a smile. "On behalf of myself and my crew." He remembered something, as he was new to this. "Oh!" he said suddenly, motioning for Celeste to come over. "May I present Lieutenant-Commander Celestia Milos, my first officer. The rest of my Operations crew is yet to arrive."
