Responding to an automated distress signal, the crew finds a small spacecraft (shuttlecraft-size) adrift in space with one lifeform on board. The alien is ailing, constantly expressing his fear of the Borg by using their hail in third person. On closer examination in sickbay, his blood is swarming with Borg nanoprobes but he doesn't seem to be undergoing assimilation. When the alien eventually stops ailing, it turns out he has forgotten everything he once knew, even his name.
In the meantime, the sensors pick up a Borg warptrail point to the proximity of a Borg cube. Eventually, they encounter the Borg, who demand that the alien be handed over for study and threaten to attack and assimilate the crew. Together with the alien, they must find a way to overcome a Borg collective that has learned from their defeat at the hands of the Federation thirteen years ago...
