So, I've seen on a few other sites people ask why B'Elanna has a Mexican last name and a few others debate whether it's actually Mexican.
Well I'm not sure about the origin of her last name, but my own personal opinion (aside from does it really matter?) is that her father is Human, so naturally her mother would adopt her husbands last name.
I'm not sure but sometime I think people must forget that B'Elanna Torres is half Human, not just Klingon.
On that note have you noticed that any spices that has one parent as Human never refers to them self as Human.
Deanna Troi always was referred to as Betazoid though her father was Human.
B'Elanna Torres always was referred to as Klingon.
It's almost if they don't want to mention Human heritage.
What do you all think?

Human's are kinda looked down upon by other species... Romulan's and Klingon's would never admit to having a half human offspring if they could avoid it... also, in DS9 Gul Dukat's daughter was half Cardassian and half Bajoran, but he always refered to her as Cardassian, it was his daughter that kept reminding him she was also Bajoran... Spock was Half human and even though he chose to be Vulcan and live as a Vulcan, not many people refer to him as just a Vulcan, and of course Bones never let him forget he was Half Human either...
as for B'Elanna Torres, Torres is a rather common name in the US these days, adn I don't remember which of her parents was human, but it seems that most half species characters consider themselves either what their father is, or what traits they show most predominantly... in B'Elanna's case, she looked more Klingon than human, so naturally she would be referred to as a Klingon... but even if her mother was the human, she could have taken the last name in honor of her, or even been named that by her parents... because when you have a child, the parents get to choose the last name as well, it does not have to be the parents last name (I learned that when my daughter was born)
ookay, I think I rambeled long enough for today...

Her father is Human. I said so in the first post. You must have been tired or distracted to miss that.
In one of the 2 parters she says her initials are BLT. There was a topic on that once too, and we all just figured that the L was simply part of B'Elanna. We all know Bones would never let Spock forget about his Human side no matter what.
I never knew your parents could just pick your last name...unless the 'couple' were never married. Of course if that part wants to be talked about I think it should be in a different thread in like the general talk or something.
I don't know why Humans are always looked down on.
Something I did notice though; all the female Klingons who are half Human reject their Klingon side.
