Once inside her ready room, Tiho sat on the couch and glanced out the window for just a moment. The crew should have enough to keep them busy for now. If all the crew didn't knew where they were by now, they'd find out. "Thanks." Of course it was not necessary, job just being done, but done smartly. La'Mara had still been in awe and a tad bit of shock when she had sat down in her chair.
"Suggestions of any kind?" A question she didn't think was right to ask on the bridge. None of the hosts had experience for situations like this, and the Desta, Nova Class vessel never had to deal with anything that was remotely overwhelming. Since both she and Hughes were newly promoted, La'Mara felt he might know how she was feeling.
He had also said he wanted to talk to here before, after the briefing was over.

After having handed the Bridge to Mishtak, Christian came into the Ready Room where he found Captain Tiho already sitting on the sofa. He waited for a minute to see if she wouldn't take offence, then joined her. The Captain thanked her, and Christian smiled. "No problem," he said, looking at the Captain. "I have to thank you for your confidence, ma'am."
Then she asked for suggestions. Christian thought for a while, going through some of the logs of Voyager. "Well," he said. "We're sort of on our mission now, aren't we? The arrival was... unconventional, but our mission remains the same. We are to find a way between the Delta Quadrant and the Alpha Quadrant." Then he turned to the immediate situation. "Lisa was right," he said. "We are alone like Voyager now. Why not explore the Quadrant for ways to help our mission and to survive on our own?"
He waited for the Captain to respond, but he had to say something else. "Captain," he said to her. "It must be hard for this to happen on your first day in Command. If there's anything I can do to help, I'll be glad."

His thanks was not really required, but it was nice. She had to have confidence in all the officers, it was something that came with the job. Though she had told Commander Hughes that she would be relying on him, and it was illogical to rely on someone who you did not have confidence in. Based on position, time with the crew, and service record it was not hard. Actually it made it easier to do.
Ha. Illogical. Tiho had been around Vulcans way too much. La'Mara's now former captain was a Vulcan, and Oxem, the host before her had resided and done quite a lot of work on Vulcan; the planet that is.
"We're sort of on our mission now, aren't we? The arrival was... unconventional, but our mission remains the same. We are to find a way between the Delta Quadrant and the Alpha Quadrant."
"Most unconventional." La'Mara smiled, and lightly laughed. "I guess someone must have goofed with the calculations in years and points of the wormhole. The scientists have been studying that wormhole, and calculating its jumping making predictions. One of the many things that our situation in the briefing didn't allow to be said, but that's over and done with now."
True, the mission hadn't changed. The main mission. Though now it seemed a gateway was to be made that lead to the Alpha Quadrant instead of the Delta Quadrant, which they were now in. Right place, wrong time was how the wormhole thing had worked out. Maybe...no. Bad idea. The aperture was only suppose to go one way, or so she had been told. Guess they'd have to wing it now.
"We are alone like Voyager now. Why not explore the Quadrant for ways to help our mission and to survive on our own?"
"Something tells me we don't exactly have a choice." La'Mara interlaced her fingers, and smiled. Positive thinking. "Maybe we can make friends with the first race we come across, providing of course they are warp capable." It was a bit odd how not everyone had discovered warp drive yet. Each culture and civilization was different.
Warp capable. Oh! Blast! Once sensors were fixed up, and the science team gave a report they should make sure that they were not near any primitive planets...actually finding out which part of the Delta Quadrant would also be a good idea. If they were in an uncharted part of the quadrant that might be a good thing. Perhaps new life they might find would be just a little bit friendlier than the few Voyager had reported. At least they had not been deposited smack dab in the middle of Borg space.
"Captain," "It must be hard for this to happen on your first day in Command. If there's anything I can do to help, I'll be glad."
It was hard. "You know, I've had the chance to meet, and talk to Admiral Janeway when I was still in the academy. Quite a remarkable officer." It was quite amazing to actually have talked to the officer and have guest appearances in class. Truth be told, Admiral Janeway was one of her heros, among others. Just don't double guess yourself by asking what would Janeway do...
La'Mara put her elbow up on the couch and rested her chin upon her hand as she gazed out the window once more.
"Homer once said: Yet, taught by time, my heart has learned to glow for others' good, and melt at others' woes. Euripides once said: Danger gleams like sunshine to a brave mans eyes. He also said; Events will take their course, it is no good of being angry at them; he is happiest who wisely turns them to the best account." La'Mara spoke those words softly, sincerely, and with an air of wonder.
She then looked back to Commander Hughes. "I think we should do something to try and calm the crews nerves. If we stick together the stronger we'll be. Reading the personnel files I know we have some young crew members on board that might need special attention. Until the crew gets used to me..."
which might be harder if they blame me for our circumstances. Change isn't often easy either...
"Would you mind also acting as a civilian liaison? Don't get me wrong, I plan to get to know the crew down to their favorite colors and foods...just for now."
"What was it that you wanted to talk with me about before. You do have permission to speak freely."

The Captain seemed relaxed under the situation now that she was speaking to Christian on his own. That surprised her First Officer a bit. After all, hadn't they just been sucked into a wormhole. "What would Starfleet think?" he wondered aloud. "We just disappeared off the face of the Eart..." He corrected himself with a smile has he noticed that he was not being entirely factual, taking the expression literally. "Alpha Quadrant."
The way Captain Tiho saw things, she sounded just like she was asking herself the WWJD question. She was answering it too, in the same way Voyager answered it: a new definition of To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before that was born out of necessity almost 20 years ago, on that fateful day when a Maquis hunt turned into a long voyage home. Christian had been 17 when Voyager returned, a first-year at the Academy, and it had set the boy with Asperger's hoping. "You know, Captain," he said. "Since Voyager returned, I have daydreamed of being in the Delta Quadrant myself. Now I'm here, and I seem to be cast into the role of Commander Chakotay myself!" He chuckled.
"To tell you the truth," he said. "What I wanted to talk to you about was that I never expected to achieve this position, least of all in this Command. I am... not a people person. If you've read my medical record yet, you'll see I have Asperger's Syndrome, a functional impairment found among humans." He paused and relaxed a bit. "I think differently from other people. Though you may not have noticed, simply adapting to other people is an effort for me, as is following social conventions. Have you noticed, ma'am, that I had trouble making eye contact while we first spoke in the Transporter Room? Even that small thing is something I have to constantly remind myself of."
He moved on to the more relevant parts. "I'm also not to good at planning and organising. I advise you not to enter my quarters as they may disturb you," he chuckled at his description of the mess in his quarters. "Though years in Starfleet have improved my planning and teamwork capabilities, I can still panick easily when everything goes wrong."
"As I said, I may not have been anyone's first choice for a Commander," he said. "I got thrust away from my computers when Commander McNight died, and into the Commander's chair." He paused again, looking at the Captain. "But surprisingly, I seem to have done a good job so far."
"So I'll do anything you want, and try to minimise the trouble from my condition," he said with a confident smile, moving back to the topic of their mission. "Keeping the crew and civilian passengers happy will be easy with Lisa... Lieutenant Huygens's Social Initiatives Group doing the organising. I wonder, as I am not good at signalling these things myself: which young crew members do you think need some help?"

"They might think 'oh no, not again'." La'Mara answered though she really need not to. Sometimes it was an automatic reflex; answering a question, even if it was not directed at anyone or was simply rhetorical. It was just part of who she was. Before the join she'd been that way, so it really was flat out her in that sense. When Commander Hughes told her that he daydreamed of being in the Delta Quadrant, and chuckled it made La'Mara smile a bit. "I suspect there is no blame game then." That was said mostly to herself of course, but loud enough to still hear.
La'Mara then just went on to simply listen. For the moment anyhow.
"I know of it, and it doesn't bother me. Actually one of Axany's best friends had Asperger's Syndrome." Tiho said as she tapped the tips of her fingers together. Sometimes she had trouble with the fact that Axany was joined... La'Mara sort of finished in her mind as she felt it would do no good to mention that aspect. Trenton was a historian and archaeologist, Suharrah a former gymnast, teacher, and spouse, Axany a doctor, Jix martial arts of all kinds, and Oxem a builder an engineer of sorts that studied on Vulcan. How was it possible to know a lot but so little at the same time?
"Somehow I think you underestimate yourself." It was what she thought, and obviously was not afraid to say so either. He also had not seemed to panic when they literally got thrown for a loop. Sounded like a pro on the bridge. "I also don't think you would have been next in line for command if people didn't think you could do the job, and do it well."
La'Mara got up and walked over to the desk, turned the monitor around then turned it on. She pulled up a few files. One was that of Lillian Daniels, the other was a family. Civilian mother, father in operations; the O' Conners. While the father was not exactly low ranking his wife and son were somewhat young. If anything happened...it was a nasty thought. There was one other on the list. A fourth year cadet that was suppose to be dropped off before they entered, but managed to get an extended leave. He was 19, studying to be in the science division.
La'Mara stepped back and gestured to the monitor.

Christian was surprised to hear that one Axany had a friend that had Asperger's. "Who's Axany?" he asked rather foolishly, then corrected himself. He was not accustomed fully to her being two persons: La'Mara and Tiho. "Oh, sorry Captain. I forgot that you're joined to a Symbiont. Like you're two persons but still one person. Does that sound like an oxymoron to you?" Somehow, he was glad. The Captain seemed to have a lot of confidence in him, justified by the confidence of others. Was it misplaced, Christian asked himself? Maybe not. Maybe he was a good First Officer after all.
"I just put on a brave face in front of people," he said, shrugging. "It's like acting, really." He chuckled at the comparison.
He moved over to the monitor and got the records. The O'Conners he knew. Shawn had played practical jokes on the ship's crew which annoyed Lieutenant Mishtak. Lillian Daniels had been there in the Transporter Room when he arrived, but seemed like a self-sufficient girl. "I know of another one from Lisa, actually," he said, looking up Ensign Digby's record on the monitor. "Ensign Rose Digby. Just turned 20 a few months ago. She just graduated from the Academy after she entered at age 16. No mean feat, and she's got the talents to match, I've heard, but she lacks confidence. And Lisa thinks she might miss her parents as well now we're in the Delta Quadrant."

"It's alright. Trust me, you wouldn't be the first to ask something like that. Or forget." La'Mara told Commander Hughes reassuringly. It was the truth too. There had been some that forgot that she was joined or that the others had been joined. Some people that met her and found out she was joined wanted to know who was who and who did what.
The biggest one was age. Hard for some to comprehend. La'Mara alone was 37, but the Symbiont was 325. Some just regarded her age as being simply 325 because of the people and things becoming aware of after the joining. "Us joined Trills can through some people for a loop."
"Are you sure sometimes you're just not acting like you put up a brave front?" It was something to think about...even if it sounded a little bit strange. Put up a brave front or act like you are putting up a brave front when in reality it is just simply you, being, well you.
"Ensign Digby." Tiho said quietly as she leaned to look at the file. "Do you or Lieutenant Huygens think it might help her confidence if she were trusted with a little bit more responsibility?" La'Mara asked thoughtfully. Some people blossomed with more others simply felt stressed. Every person was different. That was a fact.

Christian would have said he could imagine, except... he just couldn't imagine. La'Mara was a Trill - people knew about the nature of her species. How could anyone but an autist forget? "I guess the Tiho Symbiont feels about hosts the same way people feel about autists," he said with a chuckle. "After all these years, you think you know them and they can still surprise you." He thought a bit, then added: "I think I could feel the same about Trill, too."
Christian nodded to the question if he was sure about the front. "I think so," he said. "I have to make an effort to function normally. It sometimes just feels like putting on a brave face." He looked at the Captain. "I guess I boldly go where no autist has gone before," he said, referencing the Starfleet creed.
The conversation about Ensign Digby resumed. Christian didn't really know her. He started summing up all he did know. "Well," he said, "I don't really know Ensign Digby that well. First time I met her in my role as First Officer was when she - in league with Lisa - very bravely stood up to my indignation at Lisa sending her to the Bridge while it was her shift, in order to lure me to the Mess Hall for my promotion party. I'm glad she did." He admitted that he didn't know. "I don't know for sure. We should give it a try, I think: perhaps a personal show of confidence could go a long way. And she's certainly gifted." He remembered something, using his common sense, comparing the records for Digby and Cadet Syda. "She's about the same age as Cadet Syda," he suggested. "We could let them serve together more, it might give her a friend she can rely on and confide in."
It certainly helped him. Well, Lisa was quite a bit younger than himself, but still...

Hmm. "Well all an all I suppose this will make for an interesting story." La'Mara commented aloud, not really realizing she'd done so. La'Mara loved to write and tell stories. Just let her imagination lift off and take flight. It was a part of who she was, and her writing was also an outlet when she became very frustrated. She had, in the past created a holodeck program for herself where she took on the role of a traveling bard. It was fun and peaceful at the same time. I should re-create it once we are up to par again...
"I guess I boldly go where no autist has gone before,"
"And I guess that can be taken very literally now." Captain Tiho very lightly joked. She did like the saying. It was quite creative. "Would you mind if I quoted you in my writings?" Best get permission first. Some people didn't even like to be written about, so in a sense she asked permission for both. La'Mara then turned her attention back to Digby, and Hughes suggestion. It could work.
"Fourth year Cadet Zackary Syda and Ensign Digby. Not a bad idea. He wants to be a science officer, minor in operations." La'Mara thought over the idea a bit more. "It could work." Tiho said with a positive spin. "Nice thinking."

"You write stories?" Christian asked the Captain eagerly. "That happens to be a hobby of mine, too. Be sure to let me read one of your works some time!" He smiled. He was already beginning to like Captain Tiho and appreciate her as a friend as well as respect her as a Commanding Officer. "Of course you can quote me," he remarked. "I would be honoured."
As the conversation returned to the matter of Ensign Digby and Cadet Syda, the Captain thanked him for his suggestion and said it was 'nice thinking'. "Oh, it's just common sense, really," he said. "People like having people close to their age around, and they do seem to have similar interests at least in their choice of departments."
"When this whole situation is over," he suggested, "we should let the SIG organise a welcoming party for the whole crew. It could help them get to know eachother and newcomers somewhat better."

La'Mara was a bit surprised to find something in common with the ships first officer so soon. It was pretty cool though, something they could possibly share during off duty hours. "Sure, if you like you may even join me on the holodeck sometime, after I make the program. I take on the role of a traveling bard in the times of very ancient Greece. It can be quite fun."
"Actually good sense is not as common as most people might think." Being around for 325 years, Tiho saw and heard many things. Common sense; a rare find indeed. Didn't much matter which species you were.
A welcoming party? "You mean a blow out bash to welcome us to the Delta Quadrant? I thought we almost had one on the way here." Well...they sort of did. The ship didn't blow up or anything really bad like that, but they did have a blow out bash with the systems upon getting thrown. "It could help crew morale. And give a chance to check up on the youngsters."
La'Mara smiled then flipped the monitor off. "Shall we go out and see how the crew is fairing or is there something else you feel should be talked about?"

"I'd like that," said Christian when La'Mara told him about the holodeck. "You mean a bard like Homer was?" He chuckled at the joke she made about the welcoming party, and just nodded in response to her comments. There was nothing more to speak about, he said.
"No, I think we're done," he said, then moved towards the door to open it. "Thank you, Captain. After you, ma'am."

"You mean a bard like Homer was?"
"Not exactly the same..." La'Mara also enjoyed spontaneous excitement and or adventure, so she tended to put that into the program, however, she'd not even know what would pop up next. It just all depended on what choices you made when faced with one. So it was a little different in that aspect.
"No, I think we're done," "Thank you, Captain. After you, ma'am."
La'Mara mentally shrugged at the open door, and the option of her leaving first. Not like it had not been done before. In a small way Tiho sort of found it just a tad amusing. Not entirely sure as to the why part. I can live with it. "Thank you."
La'Mara stepped out onto the bridge.
