If applying for a position like Chief Engineer or Assistant Chief Operations Officer, etc. please make sure you can be an active member/player. The senior positions can be vital to how a plot turns out or is going to turn out. As a department head you pretty much have a critical role on board the ship.
Frankly I'm tired of changing the plot or story line because a department head just dropped out without notice, or didn't write themselves out. It can get to be a real pain, and can get difficult on other members who are following your lead like they are supposed to.
So, please make certain that you can and are able to be around, and have the time if you are wanting to take on the role of a chief or assistant chief.
