With Zack Syda close behind her, Ensign Rose Digby entered the mess hall. She usually came here in more casual clothes while off-duty, but now she came directly from a job in Astrometrics, so she was still wearing her uniform. She moved over to the replicator, thinking of what she wanted to drink. "Mineral water, sparkling," she decided, then removed the glass.
She moved around, looking for a table. She preferred those by the window: they gave a spectacular view, and she thought Zack might enjoy that too. She moved over to a free one by the window, then put her glass down. "Shall we sit here?" she asked Zack.

Zack followed Ensign Digby's lead. It had been somewhat of a quiet ride and walk from Astrometrics to the Mess Hall, but that was mainly due to the ships lay out. A lift was close to each room on both decks, and the lift was quite efficient; if one were to take a quote from the Borg. The doors opened and in they walked, Zack letting Ensign Digby enter first as well as get something from the replicator first. When it was his turn Zack just requested Vulcan spice tea. He was introduced to the tea pretty early on, and simply developed a taste for it. He then went over to the table that had been picked out.
"Shall we sit here?"
Zack smiled. "It is the best seat in the house." He said as he put his drink on the table then pulled out a chair for Ensign Digby. "Allow me." Zack's manners toward young ladies and women some people might find a trifle strange as they seemed to vanish over time. However, his grandparents, and parents had been unfailingly strict about good manners, and how women should be treated; with respect, and decant courtesy. It was drilled into him since he was very young.

Rose looked over her shoulder at Zack as she sat down in her chair, which was pulled out for her by the attentive young gentlemen. She smiled at him, and said: "You're so sweet, Zack!" She paused, hesitating for a bit. "Er... you don't mind if I call you Zack, do you?" She took a sip from her water.
She waited for Zack to sit down, then smiled at him. "On that note," she said. "You can call me Rose, if you like."

"You're so sweet, Zack!"
Sweet. The most horrible word in the entire universe. Zack hadn't actually considered himself sweet, but girls on the other hand: Thanks a lot mom and dad... If they raised him differently there wouldn't be much to complain about. Not that there was a whole lot now. "I thought it was girls that are suppose to be sweet, ensign. How does it go again? Sugar and spice and...everything nice... whereas for boys it goes: snakes and snails...and...puppy dog tails..." Zack said as he sat down in the chair on the other side of the table.
"Er... you don't mind if I call you Zack, do you?"
"I suspect having someone call you by your name instead of shouting 'hey you' would be acceptable." Zack paused a moment. "Of course with you being an ensign and me being a cadet you could call me some made up name and order me to answer to it."
"On that note," "You can call me Rose, if you like."
Zack had to ponder that for a minute. Would it be a good idea? They were close in age so it had pros and cons. "Thank you miss." Zack finally replied after concenting yes, even though her name is not what had come out.

She didn't really know what was wrong with using the word 'sweet' for a boy who acted like he cared. Rose giggled at Zack's little rhyme. "Puppy dog tails are rather cute," she said to him, still laughing. "Although snakes just give me the creeps." She was surprised that even now, he'd bring his rank up. "You don't think I'd do that, do you?" she asked him, afraid that he would tell her that he did. "I mean, we're off-duty..."
She took another sip from her water, then looked out of the window into the openness of space. "It's huge and exciting, isn't it?" she said, her eyes fixed on the universe outside. "Space?"

Zack took a drink of his tea. It's amazing!
"I was joking Miss Rose, about making up a name." Zack explained with a light laugh. "And I don't think you would." Zack held the cup in both hands now, letting the liquid warm them. "In some ways I've noticed that you are somewhat like my twin sister; Kendra. She's rather intelligent, we went through the academy together actually. She never exactly took a whole lot of credit when it came to her work either, and when people compared us Kendra was labeled...the shy one."
Zack's blue eyes darted to looked out the window. "Very exciting! I don't think it could be anything else." As Zack's eyes moved looking at the different stars, eventually they landed square on the ship! "Look at that design!"

Rose liked the refreshing sparkle of the mineral water, which gave her new energy. She was relieved that Zack's opinion was not as coloured by her rank as his previous remarks had suggested to him. And 'miss Rose', although a bit formal, did sound kind of cute. Then Zack told her about his twin sister, a girl named Kendra.
She turned to the comparison between Kendra and herself. "It's not that I don't want to take credit," she said. "It's just that people expect so much of me... I'm not sure whether I can live up to those expectations. I'm just so afraid to fail them..." She sat silent for a while, looking out of the window.
As the stars were pointed out to her, she simply said "wow". After a while, she looked back at Zack and smiled. "What do you think we'll find in this quadrant, Zack?"

"It's not that I don't want to take credit," "It's just that people expect so much of me... I'm not sure whether I can live up to those expectations. I'm just so afraid to fail them..."
Zack placed his cup on the table, then folded his hand, except the two index fingers which he left touching eachother. He then made a somewhat serious looking face and tried to sound as Vulcan as possible. "You should never be afraid to fail. Through failure can come great success, providing of course one learns from their mistake. Also, you should not concern yourself with living up to expectations others' may have of you, instead focus on expectations you have for yourself. Tackle one at a time. Remember, no one is perfect."
Was it ever fun to imitate Vulcans! They gave the greatest laughs...even if they never laughed. That 'advice' also had been something he had once said to his sister. Making points and giving helpful hints through humor seemed to help people more than just sitting down and saying what was what; especially if you were dealing with someone that was possibly a tad insecure...or shy.
"What do you think we'll find in this quadrant, Zack?"
"Personally I'm hoping for Borg. Personally I find them interesting. Besides, fries and a ham-borger sounds like something that would hit the spot." Thinking more on the question at hand...
"Then again we might find some bubblegum poppin' Cyndi Lauper fans..." Zack laughed as he started to actually picture coming across an 80s style dressed race that resembled Earth of that era. Tune playing on the ship 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun'. Or maybe even 'Footloose'.

"No one is perfect." Rose thought Zack was missing the point. "Oh, that's true, but they all seem to think I am!" she said. "All because of my academy record. Everyone seems to expect me to become the perfect Science Officer, but I don't think I can do it." She sat silent for a while, looking at Zack this time.
Rose was a bit surprised when Zack told her that he was hoping for an encounter with the Borg. Personally, she thought the Borg were scary and creepy. "I'm not sure if I was hoping for that," she said. "They scare me. You know, assimilation, technological superiority and all that..."
She giggled at his more lighthearted answers to her question. "That would be one hell of a party," she said, laughing. "Although personally I prefer somewhat quieter music, like Simon and Garfunkel and the Beatles. And classical music. I play piano on the holodeck sometimes." She smiled. "Oh, and on the note of fries and a hamburger," she said in a half-serious tone. "Do you want me to get you some from the replicator?"

Miss Rose seemed to be missing the point in Cadet Syda's mind. But if one was hell bent on thinking they'd come up short they would in the long run. Also, why did it matter what everyone else thought or expected? Just do your best. Women; they always insist on making things more complicated than they really are.
"Why do you care what everyone thinks Miss Rose? All that matters is what you think of yourself." Zack pointed to Rose. "If you think of yourself as a failure that is what other people will think of you as. Also, if you believe you will fail, well, you will. Just be yourself, relax." He said leaning all the way back in his chair. "If you like yourself then everyone else will like you too." Zack paused a moment before continuing on. "Of course if you don't believe me, we could always see Lieutenant Huygens and ask: 'Do you expect Miss Rose to be the perfect science officer?' I'm sure you'd get your answer more directly." Zack was totally laid back with all of this. If one was watching and listening to the conversation they might burst out laughing. "And besides, everyone knows the only true failure is when you stop trying."
"Nah. Borg are cool! Their technology is one of the things that fascinate me." Zack made his hand into a fist and pointed it downward at the table, as if tubes were going to shoot out. "Their assimilation tubes can penetrate anything. Nanoprobes can also serve as wonderful medical devices; cure just about anything. Do you know not all Borg regenerate the same? Some of the alcoves have places to rest the hands. Also not every Borg is fitted with a vocal sub vocal processor. Don't you find any of that interesting? Also, how does the Borg Queen keep managing to come back to life?" Zack could go on and on about the Borg.
"Simon and Garfunkel, huh? Never would have pegged you for one that likes them, though admittedly I've only heard one song of theirs: I am A Rock. As for The Beatles...I play some of their songs in my garage program. Beatles, Beach Boys, Bill Haily and The Comets, Elvis..." Zack took another drink of his tea. "just to name a few."
"Never been much of a fan of classical music." It was true, Zack considered it snooze-ville. Good time to take a nap, but if she liked it more power to her. "As far as playing the piano, what do you tickle the ivory with?"
"Oh, and on the note of fries and a hamburger," "Do you want me to get you some from the replicator?"
Zack held up a hand. "No thanks, I'm good."

'Miss Rose' had mixed feelings about the young gentleman at the moment. On the bright side, he didn't seem to expect as much from her as anyone else did. But that's probably because he didn't see my academy record, she thought wrily. On the other hand, his attempts to tell her that she was too unsure of herself and she shouldn't care about others did put her off a little. It seemed mean, although she didn't think it was intentional. She sighed inwardly. Boys; they always insist on making things simpler than they really are.
"You make it sound like something you do on a rainy afternoon," she said. "I don't think it will be that easy."
And then his absolute fascination with the Borg. He even mimicked one, to the point of scaring Rose when he gave a pretty accurate imitation of assimilation. She could almost hear the Borg hail 'you will be assimilated, resistance is futile'. She started back in alarm, but only for a split second, because the next moment she was telling herself how stupid it must have looked. His knowledge of the Borg was a little too much for Rose's comfort, but everyone had his or her fascinations: some of his questions intrigued her.
"Oh, sure," she said softly, "I'd love to know things like that. Don't get me wrong, I think the Borg are intriguing, but they're just a little... scary. Like I want to know more about them but not have them know more about me." She was afraid of seeing herself and anyone she knew assimilated, like had happened en masse. Still, the Borg were interesting. As was everything in this Quadrant. "I hope we find new species nobody has ever seen before. New wonderful things out there for us to explore." She thought of Janeway and Voyager that moment, and her eyes drifted back out of the window, dreaming of what she would encounter there.
The subject of the conversation turned to music, and Zack's surprise at her being a Simon and Garfunkel fan. "I just like their rock ballads," she said. "The texts are beautiful and music calm, like Scarborough Fair. Is that so strange?" He also voiced his dislike of classical music. Well, not everyone likes it... "I like playing the piano. I've been doing it since I was 7 years old. It can really calm me down, just playing music."
To the answer to her question on the fries and hamburger, she simply said: "Okay, sorry."

"You make it sound like something you do on a rainy afternoon," she said. "I don't think it will be that easy."
"Why wouldn't it be?" Zack asked shrugging a little. From his point of view it twas easy. Perhaps that was just one of the many differences between them. "Plain black and white." Which is exactly how he saw it. And how Zack viewed most thing. There was hardly any grey.
"Borg are intimadting to most people. That is something I've observed over the years." Zack laughed a little at a memory. "My sister and I were in the same class when it came to learning about the Borg. I remember when our professor turned on the platform making a projection of a drone appear Kendra just about jumped in her seat, not to mention make my hand start to tingle since she squeezed so blasted hard!"
"I hope we find new species nobody has ever seen before. New wonderful things out there for us to explore."
"I'm quite sure we will. Being in the science department does have certain advantages." Like getting to touch, see, and taste things before others...
"I have an idea." Zack said as her put his elbows on the table.

Boys, Rose thought again. They're the one mystery a female Science Officer, no matter how talented, will never understand. Zack's direct and bring-it-on attitude to problems was something she didn't think she'd ever understand, and it annoyed her slightly, but she also quite liked it. "You're a boy," she said, half-jokingly. "You can try to act like Captain Kirk, seeing things the easy way." She paused. "Seriously though, there is gray out there, if you'll take my word for it."
She commented on the story about Zack's sister. "If I were holding your hand," she said. "The moment anything remotely Borg appeared I would crush it with a strength that makes a drone's pale by comparison." She clenched her hand into a fist hard to illustrate her point. "That's how much they scare me."
Her daydreaming was something they seemed to share, although there Zack again showed his Kirkesque 'bring-it-on' attitude. "It does," she said, smiling. "It's also a responsibility."
She was intrigued by his idea. "What is it?" she asked, leaning forward. As long as it doesn't involve seeing Borg in action, I'd love to hear it.

Zack of course could have retorted to Ensign Digby's statement or comment or whatever you wanted to call it about being a boy. Not understanding because of a difference in gender, but chose not to. It would have been somewhat disrespectful; not necessarily because of rank. Sure that did happen at times; men and women not understanding each other because they did think differently...majority of the time. In this case it might be more of a personality conflict or something. Zack just decided to shrug it off, though he did rather like being compared to Kirk. Kirk had been one amazing officer, and had one heck of a career!
"If I were holding your hand," "The moment anything remotely Borg appeared I would crush it with a strength that makes a drone's pale by comparison." "That's how much they scare me."
"In that case, if we ever happen to get boarded by Borg I'll ensure your safety." Zack rubbed the back of his neck. "Own personal body guard." After getting her on edge or feeling like he did he felt like he had to offer.
"What is it?"
"Would you like to go to the holodeck?"

Rose smiled at Zack when he promised to protect her in the event of a Borg attack. That's so nice! she thought. "That'll be a safe feeling," she said warmly. "Thanks." Still, she hoped he wasn't serious. One 19-year old Cadet could not protect somebody against the superior strength of a Borg drone Zack had just praised a few moments ago.
He asked her to go to the Holodeck. "Sure," she said, smiling. "Let's go." Then she stood up, waited for Zack, and made for the holodeck.
End Rose- move to Holodeck
