"Okay. Blade higher, footing, swing-" In mid-sentence the badge issued to Shawn chirped.
//Shawn O' Conner, this is your mother calling.//
Shawn heaved a heavy sigh. "Yes mom?"
//I want you back in our quarters straight away. I found something I'd like you to explain.//
Shawn bit his lip. He'd really, really rather stay ere due to the tone of his mothers voice. He knew he was in some sort of big trouble. "Explain?" Shawn looked up at Suroc.

"Patience Apprentice O'Conner. Patience."
"Why do adults always seem to have to say that to me?" It was another retorhical question. Patience. It was always said. Always. Shawn was a bit surprised when Suroc literally put him into a stance. I could have done that on my own. Up. Down. Side to side.
"Aye." Shawn said. "Repeating the motions." For a couple of seconds Shawn thought about tossing the blade to his other hand for fun, back and forth like swashbuckling in the movies. But somehow he suspected Suroc would not like that very much. Maybe when his back was turned or on his own time. Yeah. Then.

Well that was rad! Slice and dice! "What are we waiting for then? Let's start!" Shawn was eager to get on with the lesson. It was quite cool how quickly Suroc had thrashed Borg behind. Had he ever done that in real life though? This Vulcan was starting to be most interesting. Another officer to keep an eye on.

"First we work on your form. Hand me the Blade."
Shawn first looked at the blade then handed it to Suroc. This was going to be one interesting lesson. That or long winded.Shawn mentally shrugged as he snapped the gum in his mouth. Right now he simply watched Suroc. What was he going to do besides teach?
"Apprentice O' Conner, are you serious in your commitment to learn this or was this a request of boredom? If you are merely bored please leave this Holodeck now. If however you are serious, I will mold you into a skilled Blades-man that would make a Klingon question their teaching, it will be hard, are you up to the challenge Mister O' Conner?"
Mold Me? What does he think I am? A hunk of clay? "Well it is hard for a child not to goof off." That was obviously a crack at being 'serious'. "I'm up to any challenge you can throw my way." Challenging Shawn was one very good way to get his attention, as he was in a way a bit competitive.

The holodeck. Alone it was just a silver room with projectors. His mother always said that the holodeck grid on the Intrepid class ships looked very clean, sterile, and shiny. Unlike the Galaxy class ships that were yellow and black which looked like a build up of mildew. Stains...dark and unfriendly. What personality. That was a woman for you...or a mom. With moms everything had to be clean and tidy.
"Computer, run Suroc training program zero-zero-one."
"Zero zero one. Reminds me of Borg." Shawn commented about the programs name. Dirt and sand? "Is this what the planet Vulcan looks like?" Shawn knew it was desert like. Did Vulcan children make sand castles?
"Now my apprentice your training begins. The pillars you see before you are the pillars of skill. The smallest one is where you will be, it is the basic pillar. The taller one after that is the intermediary pillar. The second largest pillar is the advanced pillar, and finally the largest pillar. The Master pillar. Should your skill with a blade ever reach such, that you are able to defeat my highest level training program, then you will stand tall on the Master pillar, that Master pillar Apprentice O' Conner is your goal."
"Uh huh. So what do I do first?"

"That is indeed what I had just stated Mister O' Conner. Golf is a game based on numerical quantities. If I did not know any better I would surmise that you were trying to play some sort of a mental game with me. To do so would be illogical, I am a Vulcan."
"Why? Don't Vulcans believe in testing limits; mental or otherwise? Isn't there always room for improvement?" Seriously. Ah well.
Shawn then went onto explain The Twilight Zone is as much detail as possible. Hopefully it had been 'sufficient' information. Shawn was very tempted to laugh at the 'gum' and 'righteous dude' parts of the conversation, but somehow managed to hold it all in and just laugh inside. Suroc was interesting. And the lesson was going to start now. Shawn blew a bubble.
"Then let us venture to the holodecks."
"Okay, teach."
End Shawn - Move to Holodeck.

"Intriguing. Four. I see. Is golf a game based on numerical quantities?"
"Actually I think it might be based on a lot of numbers in scoring." Shawn grinned after he said that. Was that not what Suroc had just asked about the game? Shawn thought it might be a little fun to play a small mind game with Commander Suroc. Then again...ah never mind.
"Who was the person you didn't have to explain humor to?" Shawn was right curious on who had gotten Suroc's joke or humor or whatever. "Who would have that kind of mind?" Shawn scratched his head in thought; not that he thought about it for a long time.
"Ambassador Spock is indeed one righteous dude. Would you like to see something uncanny?"
Shawn hopped over to where Suroc turned the monitor on. It was way uncanny!
"For over thirty years I have been told by aliens and my own people that I have an uncanny likeness to Spock. What do you think Mister O' Connor?"
"Totally Twilight Zone." Shawn pulled out some gum from his pocket. "Want some?" He asked as he took himself a piece and popped it into his mouth after taking the wrapper off. "Do people call you a righteous dude too?"
"Teach? An abbreviated form of the noun teacher? Most Vulcans whom take on an apprentice in such away have their pupils call them Master. You may do so if you wish, but Suroc will be just as logical. And Mister O' Connor we can start when ever you are ready."
"You got it!" Shawn 'golfed' once more. "Let's go 'master'," I feel like a genie in a lamp. "if you don't have anything else to do."

"Four? Four of what Mr. O' Conner? You and I are the only one in here."
"Oh." Shawn looked up at Suroc. "When people play golf they always say four." Shawn lightly shrugged with one shoulder. "I don't know why, but they do." If Shawn cared to know why he would have looked it up or asked someone or something. Really he was not interested in golf. Just like goofing around and having fun. Sometimes he was serious. At least so far he managed to keep his promise to Lieutenant Xena.
A joke? Shaw stood on the chair and put a hand on Suroc's shoulder. "When you tell a joke you aren't suppose to tell people it's a joke because then it take away the funny."
"If they had a baby I don't think the baby in question would have blonde hair. I'm not sure why, but even when both parents are Human the blonde hair is the recessive gene. Brown and black tend to be the dominate genes." Shawn pondered a bit. "How come when people are half Human they don't call themselves Human? I don't know if you've noticed, but most of them say they are Betazoid, Klingon, Bolian, and so forth and so on. Why is it like that?"
"Spock was one righteous dude!" Shawn hopped down from the chair.
"Okay teach. When do we start?"

"It's fine. I'm just not real thirsty." Shawn turned the sword in his hand like a golf club. He used his imagation to hit gold balls into a far distance. "Four!"
"I will take that as a compliment. Though when I was a boy younger than you are now, I was what you humans call a firebrand. I was very emotional and illogical, though I quickly conqured such things. As for not verbally attacking Mister Romilly, that would not have been logical as he was attempting to goad me into a verbal altercation. He lives on strife you see, it fuels him in away. The best cure in this case would be to simply not give into the altercation he desired. He made you his apprentice? Well Mister Romilly hopefully whatever duties you are given you take them a little more seriously, after all you never know when someones life is going to be in your hands."
"Yeah I never got that part." Shaw stopped playing gold with the sword and looked up at Suroc. "If you're born with emotions why do you get rid of them? Is it logical to deny yourself feeling that come with birth?" It didn't seem very logical. Didn't doing that go against nature?
"It seems undsireable to want Lieutenant Mishtak to chase you. He is not a man that I would want following me with the intent of time in the brig. Going together?" He sounded as if he was contemplating the meaning, he clearly did not understand. "Where are they going? Will they be back?"
"Lieutenant Mishtak and Ensign Harper didn't leave. They are going together; a couple. I think they might be in love, but you can never be too sure what Ensign Harper is thinking. She can be unpredictable with her emotions." Shawn shrugged. "Mishtak is cool."
"Can you teach me how to use this thing?"

"Thank you Commander Suroc." Shawn said with a smile, giving a theatrical bow when Surco said 'gifted with quick with, a penchant for trouble'. Hey, it sounded way better than how other people put it! And he didn't even sound annoyed. Which is was possible for Vulcans to get. Actually the only race that could claim women to be logical and children to be well behaved were the Vulcans. Go figure.
"You act too Vulcan to be a Romulan." Shawn replied simply. "Like in the shuttle bay, if you were a Romulan you would have at least flinched to try to keep your cool when you had words with Lieutenant Commander Romilly, who decided to make me his apprentice after you left." Out of the mouths of babes.
"I know. I'm usually the one that keeps his busy." Shawn paused in thought for just a moment. "Actually I have to give some credit of that to Ensign Harper. They're going together."

"Do Vulcans and superior complexes always go hand in hand?" Shawn had yet to meet a Vulcan that didn't speak highly of themselves or their race. They might not know they come off that way, but it still was something to think about...maybe. Shawn picked up one of the swords without permission, and gave it a swing. It was small enough to do so in the closed environment. He might be young, but he was not stupid.
Alright...not stupid enough to do something as foolish as pick up a large sword and give it a swing, lodging it in something.
"Lots are going around about you and these weapons. I even heard one that you might be a Romulan spy. That is the coolest sounding one!"
"Why don't you schedule time with Lieutenant Mishtak to fight?"

Shawn accepted the drink given him. Strangely he decided to take a little sip before putting it down on Suroc's desk. It was okay, but the weapons on the wall were more of interest to Shawn than anything else. "I just wanted to see if the rumors were true." Shawn went up to one of the walls and eyed the weapons carefully. "What'd you do? Rob the Klingons?" It was a rhetorical question of course. Oh security. "Someone has to keep them on their toes. Besides, do you really think any other fun way for me to see Xena or Mishtak? Both are very duty oriented."

Shawn stood outside of Suroc's office for a little while. He was still contemplating if he should ring the chime or not. He too had heard the rumors, and was curious about them. He also wondered who on the ship had been to see the head shrinker already that they might pass information along. After a little while longer Shawn hit the chime to alert the Vulcan that someone was outside.

"Well, if you're interested in making more than replicated miniature shuttles, report for duty tomorrow afternoon in engineering,"
Shawn Looked up at Hector with a bit of disbelief. Report for duty? Was he serious? They didn't allow children in engineering. At least not to Shawn's knowledge, which was much (depending how you looked at it) for his age. Mr. Grumpy had to be pranking him!
"I've been thinking about hiring an apprentice. You'll do just as well as any other cadet on the ship, I imagine." "14:00. Skip afternoon classes, this is better."
Skip classes? Five seconds later...after the 'ding!' went off. Shawn simply said; "Okay."
The computer then spoke. Lieutenant Xena is back on board the Orion.
"Gotta go Mister Grumpy. Duty calls!" Shawn made with the haste to the doors. "See ya later!"
