La'Mara turned in her seat to face Ensign Digby. "We don't know everything that happened on the holodeck. We only know time was spent there because of the computer logs, other than that, one thing you can count on is that even after many centuries people still love to gossip and start rumors, despite the trouble that comes with them." La'Mara told Rose good naturedly.
"As for the fancy flying; I'd like to, but if it makes you nervous we won't. I would however like you to take the wheel." La'Mara stood, and motioned for Rose to come over. She thought perhaps it might help her with the confidence deal.

"Really? Is this necessary?" Hector spoke up from where he was, still distant from the group. "I hope you're aware that the inertial dampeners and the gravity simulation on board a shuttle mean that it would be virtually impossible for you to distinguish the difference between being upside down or otherwise. It's only flying within an atmosphere that causes any sort of change in the internal chemistry of the thing."
That or something disrupting the false atmosphere inside, as tended to happen when there was a collision or a disturbance outside. Hector was well aware of those facts.

"Nessacary for Ensign Digby to fly? Not exactly, but I'd like her to." La'Mara said as she looked at Hector with a smile. "I'm fully aware of those things commander, but thank you for the refresh. Falls under things to remember." La'Mara was not exactly dismissing what Hector had said, but it was a tad ironic in a way. Caution. "There is no rule that says we can't work and have fun at the same time." Hm. Now that was something. Everyones idea of fun. That might be worth looking into at some point in time.

"Is that an er... order?" said Rose hesitantly as she came over to the Captain. "Because I'd... I mean... I'm a Science Officer, not a Helmswoman." She was not comfortable flying at all. She wasn't trained much to do it, she wasn't even good at it. The Chief Engineer's contribution, in that regard, did nothing at all to reassure her.
She hesitantly took the seat in front of the Conn console. She could see why she needed to learn this: one day she'd be flying Science missions in shuttlecraft under her own command and then she'd need to have confidence piloting. She just didn't have any now.

"Necessary for you to try to combat the arbitrary psychosis of the junior crew," Hector corrected her. "This insufferable mother hen routine might inspire the junior members of this crew to tuck themselves under your wing, Captain, but the reality is that a fear of flying is best left to Commander Suroc, and a fear of absolutely feckless flying is fairly rational."
He raised his eyebrow, watching as the young ensign took her seat nervously.
"This ensign plainly has a specialty and flying shuttles isn't it -- or do I have your permission to start performing surgery? If we're branching out, I'd like to begin with Lieutenant Mishtak. The word is he's in want of a lobotomy."

"That would be enough, Mr Romilly," Christian said irritably. Coming in late for the mission, then starting to lecture the Captain, including a harsh criticism of Mishtak, was out of his book, and the XO's day had been full of embarrassment making his fuse shorter than usual. He felt that he had to protect La'Mara from her Chief Engineer's pretentious talk and outspokenness. "We can talk about these concerns later, in my office."
He felt the need to add in a reminder of the time he arrived for the away mission. "As well as discussing the virtue called punctuality."

La'Mara put a comforting hand on Rose's shoulder. "You can do it. Just familiarize your self with the console first. I have something to take care of." La'Mara looked directly at Lieutenant Commander Romilly. She then walked up to his casually with her hands behind her back. "I do not appreciate that kind of attitude. And you do know that being a 'mother hen' has two roles." La'Mara grabbed Hector by the ear and dragged him over to the operations station on the shuttle.
"You will sit here, and only speak the read outs when it is required. For the rest of the time you will not speak unless spoken to. And this attitude of yours is keeping you on the mission." La'Mara spoke very firmly and directly as if she were disiplining one of her own children. "You do differently, you're going to spend a lot of time teaching eagar engineering ensigns one on one when we get back."
La'Mara then turned and walked back over to Rose and knelt beside her. "You can do this. Just take a deep breath, and relax." La'Mara spoke gently to Rose.

"That would be enough, Mr. Romilly. We can talk about these concerns later, in my office. As well as discussing the virtue called punctuality."
"I'm hardly the last here," Hector pointed out glibly. "One of Mishtak's finest, you'll find, is missing. I sincerely doubt we'll be talking about these concerns later, either. You may drag me into your office to discuss my behaviour at your whim, but it doesn't negate any of the points I've just made."
Their argument was interrupted as La'Mara broke away from where she was instructing Rose and crossed the room to collar Hector as though he were a small boy. He reacted instinctively and swatted her hand hard enough to free his ear from his grip. It was neither an aggressive nor a rebellious motion -- simply pure instinct. Normal people did not allow that to occur, and children only did because they were too small to object.
"You will sit here, and only speak the read outs when it is required. For the rest of the time you will not speak unless spoken to. And this attitude of yours is keeping you on the mission. You do differently, you're going to spend a lot of time teaching eagar engineering ensigns one on one when we get back."
"But teaching them what, I wonder," Hector said mutinously, but made up his mind to follow those rules to the letter. If they wanted another mindless drone along to read out logs and scans, so be it. As far as he was concerned, depriving them of his superior input was their loss.

Post by Crewman Janet Chan on Apr 20, 2011 20:28:55 GMT -5
Janet sat in her seat listening to everything that was taking place and gripping the handle of her phaser, it had been set to stun and she had a sudden urge, several in fact, to just push the button in Romilly's direction, at the very least it would shut him up for a short time. In her head she had even typed up her defense statement for the courts-martial that would surely ensue after such an action, but she was also fairly certain her commanding officer would back her up, especially after he got her report about what was being said. She watched the captain treat him like a small child and could't help but chuckle at him, she then caught herself studying his facial features and wondering what he would look like with the indentation of a Klingon fist where his face used to be and she chuckled again, a little louder this time.
She relaxed her grip and decided that it was not her place to shoot a higher ranking officer, even one as pompously dimwitted and full of himself as this one. She had never enjoyed firing her weapon at anyone, but if need be, she would make an exception in Hector's case.
Her hand was still resting just above her phaser's handle, which was blocked from everyone else's view by the chair in front of her which was supposedly where Cadet S'Louk was going to sit, then she began wondering where he was, she knew Mishtak had called him to give him his special orders, and he was a Vulcan, weren't they always on time? Something about it being illogical to be late, she hoped he hadn't gotten lost. She tapped her com badge...
"Chan to Cadet S'Louk, why have you not reported to the shuttle bay yet? And it had better be good."
She had been placed in charge of security for this mission and ordinarily she could have handled it herself, but given Romilly's attitude she felt she would need the second officer just to help keep him in line...

Cadet S'Louk had come in finally. That has to have earned him a talking to, Rose thought. Her hands trembling, Rose did what she thought she was expected to, and initiated the launch sequence. "Er...," she asked the Captain. "This is the way to initiate launch sequence, right?" The shuttle's engines started powering up.
"Digby to Bridge," she said. "We're ready, sort of. Could you please open the shuttlebay doors?"

"This is the way to initiate launch sequence, right?"
"You're doing fine." La'Mara said gently putting a hand to Roses' shoulder. She then listened as Ensign Digby made the request and smiled when Syell was the one to reply. So far, things seemed to be going just great (the exception of Mister Romilly's outburst earlier). La'Mara fully sat back in her chair now. "Take us out ensign."

"Er... yes ma'am," said Rose, still a little nervous even though the Captain's hand on her shoulder gave her some comfort. If something goes wrong, the good news is that the Captain will know I did my best; the bad news is that the Captain will see it and I'll never fly a shuttle again. There was tension, generated by the pressure she felt, as she slowly took the shuttle out, with extreme caution, not at all the sweeping flight out that others were accustomed to. It was like a snail's pace, actually.
Once they were out, she accelerated some, but not much. "Er... did that go right?" she asked hesitantly.

"It was perfect." La'Mara told Ensign Digby assuredly. She could remember what it was like to be unsure, and the first time it felt behind the helm, with an audience. It could be nervous. One of the previous hosts though got ill when on a shuttle. It just was not that hosts thing. "Think you can do the rest?"

S'Louk arrived in the shuttle bay, a little later than he hoped. He had been finishing up the report on the 'Incident' in the shuttle bay, when he had recived the summems from his chief. He had then proceeded to the armoury, been given his equipment and headed to the shuttle bay. As he arrived, he noted that he was the last one to arrive. Stepping into the he looked directly at the Captain and said "I apologize for my lateness Ma'am. I was finishing of my security report." With that, he took his place in front of Crewman Chan, and awaited the next part. Within momemts, the shuttle bay doors opened, and they were of. Had he been Human, he might have felt nervous about what was going to happen. But being Vulcan, his face remained blank and unreadable.
