Suroc entered the Holodeck still leading Shawn. He stood in the middle of the room and looked around. He nodded and then looked to Shawn. He hoped that Shawn was serious about becoming his apprentice. This prospect intrigued him immensely.
"Computer, run Suroc training program zero-zero-one." As he he commanded a phenomenal arena showed up and filled the room like a flood of water washing over a small room. There was dirt and sand everywhere. And there were four pillars that stood. Each one accessible only by sue of the shorter one.
"Now my apprentice your training begins. The pillars you see before you are the pillars of skill. The smallest one is where you will be, it is the basic pillar. The taller one after that is the intermediary pillar. The second largest pillar is the advanced pillar, and finally the largest pillar. The Master pillar. Should your skill with a blade ever reach such, that you are able to defeat my highest level training program, then you will stand tall on the Master pillar, that Master pillar Apprentice O'Conner is your goal." Suroc said sounding very professional, very sagely.

The holodeck. Alone it was just a silver room with projectors. His mother always said that the holodeck grid on the Intrepid class ships looked very clean, sterile, and shiny. Unlike the Galaxy class ships that were yellow and black which looked like a build up of mildew. Stains...dark and unfriendly. What personality. That was a woman for you...or a mom. With moms everything had to be clean and tidy.
"Computer, run Suroc training program zero-zero-one."
"Zero zero one. Reminds me of Borg." Shawn commented about the programs name. Dirt and sand? "Is this what the planet Vulcan looks like?" Shawn knew it was desert like. Did Vulcan children make sand castles?

"Uh huh. So what do I do first?"

"Uh huh. So what do I do first?"
"First we work on your form. Hand me the Blade" Suroc said as he extended his arm to take the Blade.
"Apprentice O'Conner, are you serious in your commitment to learn this or was this a request of boredom? If you are merely bored please leave this Holodeck now. If however you are serious, I will mold you into a skilled Blades-man that would make a Klingon question their teaching, it will be hard, are you up to the challenge Mr.O'Conner?" Suroc asked Shawn. Vulcans did not express emotion though some how Suroc sounded more serious than her normally did if such things were possible.

"First we work on your form. Hand me the Blade."
Shawn first looked at the blade then handed it to Suroc. This was going to be one interesting lesson. That or long winded.Shawn mentally shrugged as he snapped the gum in his mouth. Right now he simply watched Suroc. What was he going to do besides teach?

Mold Me? What does he think I am? A hunk of clay? "Well it is hard for a child not to goof off." That was obviously a crack at being 'serious'. "I'm up to any challenge you can throw my way." Challenging Shawn was one very good way to get his attention, as he was in a way a bit competitive.

"Computer load Suroc training program nine." The computer then brought four Borg into the room. Suroc then said initiate and the Borg came to life. No sooner then they started to fire and try to assimilate suroc that Suroc erupted into a hurricane of whirling metal death. It was difficult to believe that people could move so fast. In seconds four Borg lay dead on the floor and Suroc handed Shawn back the Blade.
"By the time I am done with you Apprentice O'Conner, you will be able to do that. Computer re initialize former program." The four dead Borg disappeared and there was once more Suroc, Shawn and sand. Suroc looked at Shawn.

Well that was rad! Slice and dice! "What are we waiting for then? Let's start!" Shawn was eager to get on with the lesson. It was quite cool how quickly Suroc had thrashed Borg behind. Had he ever done that in real life though? This Vulcan was starting to be most interesting. Another officer to keep an eye on.

"What are we waiting for then? Let's start!"
"Patience Apprentice O'Conner. Patience." Suroc walked behind Shawn and literally put him in a combat sword stance. He then guided Shawn's hands and arms up with the blade, down, diagonal slash, and thrust.
"Now I want you to repeat those motions over and over. This will help with your technique. You will be doing this for a while. When you have gotten use to that I will move on to the next set of techniques which will undoubtedly lead to speed training. You will not enjoy that. Eventually you will need a live opponent to spar against. When that is required you will be sparing with me." Suroc told the boy. Suroc walked away then and stood off watching Shawn. Not taking his eyes off him for a second.

"Patience Apprentice O'Conner. Patience."
"Why do adults always seem to have to say that to me?" It was another retorhical question. Patience. It was always said. Always. Shawn was a bit surprised when Suroc literally put him into a stance. I could have done that on my own. Up. Down. Side to side.
"Aye." Shawn said. "Repeating the motions." For a couple of seconds Shawn thought about tossing the blade to his other hand for fun, back and forth like swashbuckling in the movies. But somehow he suspected Suroc would not like that very much. Maybe when his back was turned or on his own time. Yeah. Then.

"Why do adults always seem to have to say that to me?"
"Perhaps people keep telling you this because you are indeed impatient and need to learn to be more logical and less...emotional. If you lose your patience in combat, you are dead Shawn. I would much prefer to not lose a second apprentice. You can become great, or you can be unnoticeable. What will you decide to do with your self Apprentice O'Conner."
"Aye. Repeating the motions." He continued to watch Shawn practice. His scrutiny not missing a thing. "Shawn, raise your blade higher, watch your footing, swing with more power. If you like that blade, when you finish your training which I shall decide, you may keep that blade, as you would have earned it. Is that decent incentive for you to master your training, besides being a really cool swordsman?" Suroc said, trying to appeal to Shawn's sense of awesome.

"Okay. Blade higher, footing, swing-" In mid-sentence the badge issued to Shawn chirped.
//Shawn O' Conner, this is your mother calling.//
Shawn heaved a heavy sigh. "Yes mom?"
//I want you back in our quarters straight away. I found something I'd like you to explain.//
Shawn bit his lip. He'd really, really rather stay ere due to the tone of his mothers voice. He knew he was in some sort of big trouble. "Explain?" Shawn looked up at Suroc.

Suroc listened silently as Shawn's mother gave him a nice verbal pre reaming over combadge. He would assume this is quite embarrassing for him. Suroc listened read and watched shawn's body language. And then the most logical out come that would have been as desirable as a Nausicans spear in the rib or a Klingon disruptor in the neck. Shawn looked up at Suroc and asked him to explain things with his mother.
"What is it that I am to to explain to your mother Shawn?" Suroc asked. While his being drawn into this would have been inevitable, it was rather illogical to think that Suroc could illuminate matters that seemed to stem fourth from a greater reservoir of emotion that come with being at wits end from a problematic child. Starfleet children raised on vessels were often like shawn, due to a poor growing environment of not enough youth, peers his age were instrumental in young shaping. That was his professional opinion of course. However Shawn was now his apprentice. He would be able, no able was not quite the word he would be....happy to assist if need be.

"What is it that I am to to explain to your mother Shawn?"
Shawn gave Suroc a rather perplexed look. That's exactly what Shawn would like to know. His question had not been directed at his new teach, but his mother. Shawn dreaded explaining things to her, because it meant that he would also have to tell his father, and his father was the disciplinarian out of the two. It really was no big deal if mom just scolded away. Dad however took action.
//Yes. Don't make me track you down.//
And ish! "Commander I think we're going to have to cut the lesson short." Shawn handed Suroc the blade back. "For safe keeping?"

"Commander I think we're going to have to cut the lesson short."
"Indeed, that would be the most logical thing to do giving the situation." Suroc took the Blade back from Shawn and gave it a fanciful twirl. He silently gestured for Shawn to off to see what his mother wanted with a single nod. As if that nod had conveyed all the emotion and feeling that was required. Silly Vulcans.
"Computer end program and store data." Suroc commanded of the computer and made his way out of the holodecks and back to his office. He thought about the kind of trouble that Shawn was in and shook his head.
End: Suroc, transfer to office
