"Hmm, is that what you expect? I promise you nothing," Hector returned, meeting her lips briefly before he continued: "If I say I can do something, it's because it's true. What I will do is another matter. I never promise."
He was being incredibly up front with her, really. Anything she wanted from him she was gambling on. He couldn't predict himself sometimes -- he was endlessly drawn to self-sabotage, however. There were times when he wasn't even aware it was happening.

"Just dinner, an argument or two; hopefully one that doesn't lead to an injured party, and more kissing." She actually expected a turbulent evening. More or less. They both stood toe to toe already, which was nice. They'd also made out, which was also nice. "What I don't expect to have to do is arrest you. So, don't do anything stupid until after I'm back in my own quarters."
The no promises thing Xena could live with because if he did promise her something she would not have taken his word on the matter in the first place. Doing so is how people ended up getting hurt or...dead. "I don't believe in promises. Not anymore. That's why everyone is dead. Trusting people is well..." Xena's voice drifted off. She could still smell and see the corpses as if they were still fresh. A pained looked appeared briefly on Xena's face then it was gone.

"What? Dead?" Hector wrinkled his brow, perplexed. She looked so distant and hurt in that instant that he didn't doubt for a moment that she was serious.
"What do you mean, dead?"

"Dead only has one meaning as far as I'm aware. So, no longer living." Death was a difficult thing for Xena to deal with. So was remembering what had happened on the colony. Which is why Xena didn't think about it at all; if it could be helped. She didn't want to deal with it. It hurt too much so Xena block out the pain in any way, shape, or form.
"Look, when you stupidly trust any person, you just might end up watching your family, and many others burn and get shot. Okay?" Xena said point blank with some tension in her voice. As much as she wanted to right now Xena didn't dare close her eyes.

Aha.
"So you pick the guy who can never disappoint you, your expectations are so low already."
Hector raised an eyebrow. He wasn't unsympathetic, nor was he uninterested -- it was just that he was more interested in what made Xena tick than in the sordid details of some past trauma.
If he had known her better he might have touched her hand, or been a little more affectionate. As it was, everything was too fresh. He had no idea whether she would want that or not.

"No!" Xena pert near snapped his head off with that 'no'. That was not why she was drawn to Hector; that much she knew for certain. "And don't start trying to psychoanalyze me either." Xena warned. She was a person, not some nut job wacko! Xena also didn't like to be questioned or fussed over. "You're different. Irritating, reckless, infuriating, argumentative, careless, unpredictable, erratic, challenging..." Why do I like him again?

"Don't, I'll get big-headed."
He was joking, which was his natural reaction to anything strenuous or dark in nature. He didn't know what to tell her. He had no intention of leaving anybody deceased on his watch, but he didn't make promises, so he wasn't going to tell her that.
Instead he nudged her with his elbow.
"My quarters. Eight o'clock. Wearing nothing but a bunch of flowers."

"I think it's too late for that." Xena replied giving Hector an Eskimo kiss. Yes, she was teasing, or was she? Hmm. That was something Hector would have to figure out on his own; if he so decided to. Which he might wonder or not. Xena didn't know and she did care. He then nudged her.
Xena smirked. "Well, if you don't want to wear anything but a bunch of flowers I certainly won't stop you." This time around Xena made it clear that she was teasing and knew full well what he actually meant. She also nudged him back. If only I could stop time. Xena gave Hector another passionate kiss. "I better go now."

"Don't give me ideas."
He offered her a wicked grin, finding himself a little pleased and relieved that she wasn't going to dwell on whatever awful thing had happened in her past. He gestured for her to exit the Jefferies' tube first.
"You go, I'll give it a minute and come out after you."

"Don't give me ideas."
"Wouldn't dream of it. Not even by saying I want you to take me in your arms tonight." Idea enough? She then leaned in as if she were going to kiss him again, however simply, and lightly patted his cheek. All in good fun. And he wants me to go out first...
"You make it sound like Bonnie and Clyde." Xena said as she rolled her eyes. "If I go first, keep your hand to yourself," Xena started to go, but paused, and added. "at least until eight." She then started crawling to exit the jeffries tube. She got to the hatch and tapped the pannel again, unsealing it. Xena then opened it, looked around and got out. Out of pure fun she closed it; no locking, just closed it behind her instead of keeping it a crack open.
She lightly laughed inside. A certain ensign then came up to her. It was the one Hector had been wanting to shock. Same one that also interupted them in her quarters. "Lieutenant, have you seen Lieutenant Commander Romilly?"
"Well I know I saw him when eariler today, and when I came to engineering he was at the main console by the warp core. Why do you ask ensign?"
"He's missing again. And we have a slight phase varience in the coil assembly."
Xena thought for a moment. "Why don't you try looking in storage compartment A? It is possible he went to get a spare part or tool to fix something. That is his job after all, to maintain the ship, then again it is also your job as well. Even Santa has his little helpers."
"Right." Said Hollander.
"Then go." Xena said firmly shooing him away with her hands. Hollander nodded then went off.

Little did anyone know that Ensign Harper was already on the problem with the coil assembly. That's how she was. If something was off, misaligned, or malfunctioning, she fixed it then when finished wrote up a report on it. She had after all been that way before they had a chief engineer, when she became acting chief, and still the same even though they now had a new chief to replace the one that left.

Hector gave it a full five minutes of twiddling his thumbs before he exited the jefferies tube and was irritated to find Xena still standing there -- the idea was that she would leave, and he would come out after her and it wouldn't look suspicious. He raised an eyebrow at the back of Hollander.
"I hope you told him I accidentally flushed myself out of an airlock," he said sourly. He might have said more, but his comm badge came to life and the Captain requested him in the shuttle bay. Away mission. He hadn't been aware he was supposed to be going on an away mission, but then he hadn't cleared his memos and other messages in days. He'd stopped reading those when Hollander had started sending them.
Perhaps he should have been paying more attention to the schedule.
"Well. If I'm not back by eight... break into my quarters and enjoy yourself." He was being sarcastic, of course, but he didn't doubt that she would do it. He didn't expect he would back nearly so late. He quirked an eyebrow at Xena and headed towards the door.
End Hector... move to Shuttlebay.

Xena simply kept her mouth shut, well except for the little smile that was creeping onto her lips. He looked so adorable when irritated! Hold up! Since when do you use words like 'adorable?! Xena kinda of creaped herself out just a bit. They'd only known one another how long?! There was only one thing to do. Seek help.
"Well. If I'm not back by eight... break into my quarters and enjoy yourself."
"Roger." Alright, he was being sarcastic. Xena knew that. However, she'd still go in. An invite or offer, sarcastic or not was still one. Xena watched Hector leave then did a quick check on that console again...just in case he put some kind of time thing on it for it to reactivate when she left. It looked fine. Now it was off for...help.
End Xena

Well okay now. Things seemed to be under control, and odds and ends tucked back in. With Lieutenant Commander Romilly away, as far as Sharpay was aware she was in charge. She was also going to be making sure there was nothing for him to complain over when he came back. Hardly and easy task. And no; it was not to please him, it was so he'd not be on her case about anything. Alright Sharpay had just finished going over the last report, and instructed the team to call her if anything was out of the ordinary. Now it was her time. Off duty.
End Sharpay
