Christian Hughes had been overwhelmed by the sudden reassignment of Captain Prince. Now having served a few months as First Officer aboard the Orion, Christian felt that he had developed a steady working relationship and friendship with the Captain, one of mutual trust and confidence. When he first met Captain Prince, he had to remind himself constantly to look at her when he was speaking. Now she was a trusted friend, it came with a little less effort. He had heard about Captain Tiho, and that she was a Trill - two people in one body, really - and hoped she'd be as good a Captain as Captain Prince.
Leaving Captain Prince to prepare herself for her transfer of command, Christian had been tasked with the practical arrangements. The formality of receiving a Captain and bidding farewell to another required the crew to assemble outside the Transporter Room, with the senior crew assembled for presentation inside. Christian made sure the systems were functioning by letting Lieutenant Francis beam him to the Cargo Hold and back, then tapped his commbadge.
"All hands, this is Commander Hughes. Report to your positions for the ceremony as instructed." Another tap of his commbadge and he summoned the Senior Staff, chiefs and assistants. "All senior staff, report to Transporter Room 2 for the transfer of command." As one by one the divisions reported that the hands were in position for the ceremonies, Christian smiled. He had definitely grown into his position now.
His next duty was to contact the arriving USS Desta, on-board of which their new Commanding Officer was awaiting transfer. "Harold," he said to the Ops Officer. "Hail the Desta from here. You can do it, can't you?" "Of course, Commander," said a smiling Lieutenant Francis, confident in the task his former Department Head had given him. "The Channel is open. Audio only." "Desta, this is Commander Christian Hughes, First Officer of the Orion, speaking from the Transporter Room. Once Captain Prince has arrived here, we are all-set to receive Captain Tiho."
As the Senior Staff assembled in the Transporter Room, Christian paused. He still had one duty to perform. He hesitated for a moment, then reiterated to himself that this was a duty, even though it was not a pleasant one. With a sigh, he tapped his commbadge.
"Captain Prince," he said to his Captain, in a friendly but always respectful manner. "We are all set to begin the transfer of command. Please come to the Transporter Room to bid us farewell..."

Lydia had finished her packing yesterday, as well as had done any tidying up that was required. Goodbyes were never an easy thing, but there were part of life. She had just stepped out of her quarters, well former quarters by now, and was heading to the transporter room as needed to be done. Lydia would sure miss this ship and its very fine crew. Unknown to anyone Captain Prince had left the captain to be a message. A sort of congrats, hello, and handle with care all in one.
Captain Prince stepped into the turbolift and instructed it to take her to the transporter room. As always it complied, and when the doors swished open Lydia stepped out.
And the crew was assembled. Lydia walked the corridor with a smile and a little nod to the crew members. Finally Captain Prince arrived at the transporter room and walked through the doors. Her senior staff. Commander Hughes had grown into his position as first officer since the promotion. Lydia was quite proud; proud of all of them.
"Nicely done."

As acting chief engineer, Ensign Harper was one that was permitted to be in the transporter room with the rest of the senior staff. She had also made sure the ship was, well, ship shape like all the others; of course her doing that was not exactly for the goodbye or the hello. Sharpay was picky and a bit fastidious about the workings of her ship. This whole new captain deal took her by surprise...well surprise for everyone she supposed. Oh would she love to know why.
Captain Prince walked through the doors with a smile. The words 'nicely done' were said. If Captain Prince was saying it just to Commander Hughes or all of them it was not quite clear, well to Sharpay anyhow. However, being on the same ship Shar learned that Captain Prince did compliment her officers, and genuinely cared. It was first hand knowledge actually. The first time they had met was not the best, but the captain had seemed to mother her just a tad due to the situation. Now she was leaving.
Hopefully, the new captain would be just as good.

Lieutenant Trishany Rei was all prepared to bid farewell and hello to each captain. She had been sensing sadness as well as nervousness among the crew since they learned of the switch. Personally Trish believed everything would work out just fine. She had to believe that. Not just for her, but others as well. Same reason that Commander Hughes had to believe that too.
Trish smiled when Captain Prince walked through the doors. If she knew Captain Prince, there was a warm hug for each senior staff member. They had been through a lot, and gotten to know one another. Aside from that, it was part of her personality; even if it was not the professional thing to do. Then again Captain Prince did not always do the professional thing. Their new captain, Captain Tiho didn't always do everything professionally either. Being part of the head of the medical staff Trishany had access to Tiho's file.
"Captain." Trish acknowledged.

Lt. Mishtak had arrived at the transporter room early, after reading the Starfleet Security and Intelligence files on the new Captain, and prepared to say farewell to his commander and friend. Over his uniform, in addition to his regular Klingon sash, he wore a ceremonial Klingon robe. He normally only pulled this robe out for formal occasions where a full dress uniform was required, but he felt that saying good-bye to Captain Prince in anything less would be dishonorable to her.
They had served together on this ship for some time now, and he had taken a liking to the Captain. The one coming aboard was a mystery to him, he knew her entire Starfleet history but could not tell you about her personality in the slightest.
As Captain Prince entered he stood at attention, when she said "Nicely Done." he knew it was meant for Commander Hughes who had set up this ceremony. On other ships the change of command was either simple and not attended by many crew members or it was an all out starfleet affair in a space dock, this was a nice mixture of both.
He had a few things he would like to say to the captain before he left and was looking forward to her making her rounds among the officers...

Assistants welcomed too. A surprise. Those never failed on this ship; just like the reassignment. Xena was not looking forward to saying goodbye or hello, but it was such in the life of any person, not just officers. Xena had looked up some of the captain to be. The person was Trill. An always interesting species in Xena's personal opinion. Not too much was available. Well, everything was in place for both so... Let's get this show on the road Xena thought a bit impatiently. She knew one thing for sure; the longer Captain Prince stayed the harder it was going to be for everyone to let go. And yes, Xena cared.

//"Desta, this is Commander Christian Hughes, First Officer of the Orion, speaking from the Transporter Room. Once Captain Prince has arrived here, we are all-set to receive Captain Tiho."//
//"Acknowledged." Came the short stoic reply over the comm lines. "We are prepared to transport on your signal."//
La'Mara was personally ready to go. She had everything she needed as well as her orders. She wanted to get settled in as soon as possible. A senior staff briefing was also at the top of her list of things to do. Despite her happy and fun attitude, La'Mara was truly organized, and tidy. Occasionally efficient. Unique was more her style. Or most would say. Right now though she was feeling apprehensive, impatient, as well as eager.

How would they all get along? Faith could not help but wonder. She began to ponder many things actually. She was interrupted by the voice on the comm lines. No, Faith was not completely inside, but she was close enough to see and hear. Sounded like a Vulcan's voice. On any other ship the exchange would have happened already, but this was no regular ship, and no regular crew. What would happen next?

Post by Lt. JG Lisa Huygens on Mar 1, 2011 9:37:14 GMT -5
As Assistant Chief Science Officer, Lisa Huygens was the most senior Science Officer on the Orion. As such, she would have the honour of meeting the new Captain first of all her division. Reluctant to say goodbye to Captain Prince but eager to meet Captain Tiho, Lisa went down to the Transporter Room using the turbolift, making sure on the way that her division was all-set for receiving the new Captain. In the course of this duty, everything went well, if you didn't count the fact that Ensign Digby, who was responsible for a few young crewmen, was not in position yet.
Arriving in the Transporter Room, Lisa greeted Christian. "Good job, Commander," she said. After Christian called the Captain, the Assistant Chief Science Officer waited for a while until the Captain came into the room and said "good job" to Chris, but also to many of the senior staff, she felt.
Even though Lisa felt the need to speak to Captain Prince, with whom she'd worked not only as a senior Science Officer but also as chairperson of the ship's Social Initiatives Group, which organised social activities for the crew, and whom she had always found very open and receptive towards her ideas, she left it to Christian to speak to the Captain first.

"Nicely done," said Captain Prince when she entered the Transporter Room. The comment made Christian smile: he had done his very best on organising what had turned out to be a very large logistic operation indeed. Everything had to be sorted out, and secretly Christian had had the help of many of the senior staff, particularly Lisa's, in organising it, without which he would never have made it. Yes, nicely done to you all, he thought. "Thank you, Captain," he said as he smiled.
As the ship's number two, Christian was first in the pecking order to say his farewells to Captain Prince. Stepping forward and turning so that he could be seen to be speaking both to the departing Captain and his senior staff colleagues, Christian started a little word of thanks:
"Captain Prince," he said softly, then reminded himself to speak up. "Over these past months, we all have worked together to keep the Orion running smoothly. Yet I think we all feel all the more pronouncedly today that the one person who kept our crew together was not me, nor any of us, but you. Your best quality was caring deeply for the people you work with, something I recognise and respect, and which made you not just a respected Commanding Officer to me, but also a trusted and valuable friend."
He turned to personal experiences. "When you promoted me, I was unsure of myself, aware that I had a functional disability which might impact on my ability to function as First Officer. Yet it didn't much seem to make any difference for your trust in my abilities. I think I know why, and not just in my own case, you inspired our best performance: you know the persons you serve with."
He came to the subject of the Captain's departure. "Today you leave us, as part of that care for persons that also extends to your family (OOC: I am assuming Christian knows the reason for the Captain's departure, and that he has had permission to make it public in vague terms). I hope - I know - that you will think of us as we continue on our mission to the Delta Quadrant under Captain Tiho's command, in the knowledge that you are a source of inspiration to all those of us who served with you, even though you may no longer be in command of the Orion."
"It has been an honour to serve with you, Captain," he concluded his remarks. But he had more to say, which he had to say to the Captain as his friend, on a more personal basis. He took a step towards Captain Prince, turning towards her. To be sure, he asked a question that was formally required, but deep down he knew Captain Prince would not mind:
"Permission to speak freely and personally, ma'am?"

Lydia listened as Christian spoke. What he said had been true; she did care deeply, for each and every one of them. She had also trusted, and believed in them as well. It was not a task either. All deserved it; none had proved differently. "All of you have come very far, and exceeded all of my personal expectations. In my years as a Starfleet officer, past and to come I don't believe I'll come across a finer crew." Captain Prince lightly shook her head. "No. The honor has been mine."
"Permission to speak freely and personally, ma'am?"
Lydia look at Christian, and slightly tilted her head a bit, and softly smiled. "By all means."

Christian still wanted to say something to the Captain on a personal basis of friendship rather than speaking on behalf of the crew. As he did so, he didn't look at her, and didn't remind himself to, becoming for a moment his autistic, introvert self, as always happened when he had to cope with a sudden change. "Captain," he said. "Thank you for all you have done for me since I boarded the Orion. Without you... I'd never have reached the point where I am now." When he had said that, he was reminded that he spoke to a friend, and things became easier for him.
"I feel a bit nervous, Captain," he continued, showing that understanding for the reasons of the Captain's departure conflicted with his uncertainty about the working relationship with a new Captain. "I've read Captain Tiho's service record, and it should be alright, but still..." He stopped short of finishing his sentence, looking away from Lydia and staring at nothing in particular.
"I'll miss you, Captain," he concluded after a while. "As a friend."
Lydia would understand that there was more going on than Christian said: the First Officer had been overwhelmed by the sudden changes, and even though it didn't show, he had been very nervous about the change in command. What if Captain Tiho and himself never arrived at the mutual trust that Lydia had? For a while, Christian had even considered telling Captain Tiho that he would resume his duties at Operations if she no longer had need of his services, retreating back to the reliability of his computers.
In the end, he'd arrived at a simple conclusion: Captain Prince had trusted him and the crew had never let him down. A new Captain would need a First Officer who was familiar with the crew: Christian Hughes was, insofar as his Asperger's Syndrome allowed him to be.
He waited for Lydia's answer patiently.

That was some speech on both parts. Sharpay thought. She was not much on or for speeches. They just made it harder to say goodbye, and sometimes got a few people to tear up all over the place. Hope that doesn't happen. Just had the floors cleaned. Mental shrug. The words of family had jerked Shar just a bit. Was there something wrong that they had not been informed of? Was it any bodys guess?

When the big talk was taking place, Xena took one step up, as she was already in the back near the steps to the transporter controls. With her height she didn't really need to take one step, she did anyway. She swiftly sent a message to the other ship to 'stand by'. At least that would let them know they were moving into place, and not make a requirement to hail again. Xena was just following protocol. It would also serve so the conversation would not get interrupted.
From the sound of it Captain Prince was also leaving on some kind of family note. It happened to the best of them. Even her. Though Xena had not been part of the Federation at the time. An honor. Perhaps.

It was true. They had all come a bit of a ways. Everyone meant what they were saying as well, which was a very good and healthy thing. Out of the corner of her eye Trish saw what Xena had done. It was quite nice. It wouldn't be long now.
