When a spare moment came along in the life of a captain it was a good idea too take advantage of it one way or another. Seeing as it was one of those minutes during off duty time, La'Mara decided to go down to the holodeck and run her program, that she had mentioned to Commander Hughes while they had their first little chat in her ready room after getting sucked through to the other side of the galaxy. When she had the time to add it to the computer was a different story entirely.
Speaking of stories, the role to be taken on was that of a traveling bard during the times of ancient Greece. "Computer, run program Tiho one seven alpha."
The computer beeped and the doors opened. Inside was basically green. Rolling hills, trees, other shrubbery, a lake, dirt road, wagon trails from its wheels on the road, and something of an entrance to a large city could just barely be seen in the far distance.
As far as sounds, there were: birds, mostly, a few sheep, and horses, which meant a small town was close by. When one stepped inside the outfit would automatically change. When La'Mara stepped through the doors she was in a old looking orangish and reddish dress, with dark brown sandals.
"Well, what do you think?"

Christian had accepted the Captain's invitation to the holodeck with a smile. He had been looking forward to the promised holodeck adventure which they were about to enter. La'Mara had recreated Ancient Greece - one of his favourite time periods. They were to play travelling bards. Anticipating something really immersive, Christian stepped into the Holodeck.
Looking at his clothes, he found he was dressed in a simple blue tunic with meandering green patterns around the edges, had a hairband in his hair and was walking on sandals. He looked at the Captain and saw that she was wearing Greek clothes too. "Looks good," he said, both about the clothes and about the surroundings.
"What city is that?"

La'Mara turned around and squinted in the direction of the city. "Well I know it's not Gaul." La'Mara replied cheerfully. And yes, they were that far back. The B.C. ages. "We could travel that way and find out," La'Mara turned to face Christian. "or we could follow the path," She pointed to the path with a quick hand. "and see what town it takes us to." It was just a simple suggestion.
"I'll let you decide." Hey, why not? They were here to relax. Right now La'Mara was not captain of the Orion...unless they suddenly went to red alert. That'd not be too good of a thing to happen. Who dares interrupt the time to have fun?!

Christian looked around him. "Not Gaul, Captain?" he asked La'Mara. "Why, that's much help." He threw the Captain a grin. He spun on his feet as a way of deciding where to go, and pointed in a certain direction, at the path. "Fortuna has chosen, it seems," he said with a smile. "Let's go that way, and see wehre we end up."

Did he just say captain? La'Mara smiled gently, and placed a hand on Christians' shoulder. "Please, call me La'Mara." She then started off the direction with the path. "I'm not sure why, but to be honest I kinda hope we're heading to a village in Thebes." La'Mara lightly shrugged. "If it is then at least I'd know where we are, but then again, sometimes it's nice just to be surprised. Unless of course it's an ambush." Oh little did people know that La'Mara could be quite a chatterbox.

"Aye Cap...," said Christian, then corrected himself. "La'Mara." He followed her closely into the path, enjoying the sun on his face (even though it gleamed annoyingly in his glasses and he had to keep his eyes half-shut at times. "Thebes sounds good," he said as La'Mara explained what she thought. Then she turned to an ambush.
"Ambush?" he said, somewhat startled. "I hope we don't encounter one. But then, we have the safety on, don't we?"

La'Mara could help but laugh the way Christian seemed surprised at an ambush. "An ambush would be the least of our worries, seeing as we don't have money or swords." La'Mara continued on the path with Christian. "And yes, the safety protocols are on." The smell of roasted lamb drifted in their direction due to the shift in the gentle breeze. "Smell that?! Lamb." La'Mara was a bit enthused. "If I'm right and someone is throwing a party we can rake in a pretty denar!"
La'Mara was about to take Christian by the hand and run into town, however, the ground started to shake. La'Mara put her arms out to try and steady herself without success as she fell. "Looks like I found lunch!" A booming voice rang through loud and clear. Looking up one could see it was a gigantic cyclops. "Lunch? Where?" La'Mara asked the cyclops. "The two of you!"
"Us?" La'Mara looked at Christian then back up at the cyclops. This is a talk your way out situation...

"An ambush would be the least of our worries, seeing as we don't have money or swords." That was precisely why it worried Chris: they had no means to either buy them off or fight them off. Lucky that we have safety protocols indeed... I...
The smell of lamb made Christian snap out of his thoughts. La'Mara was starting to get enthusiastic, but just as she was about to take him by the hand and run towards the smell, the ground shook beneath their feet. "Wh-" said Christian, but he couldn't finish his question as, like the Captain, he was thrown to the ground.
The booming voice made Christian feel uneasy. Looking up, he looked from a low perspective at a very large (seemed even larger) and ugly cyclops who wanted to have them for lunch. La'Mara tried to remain innocent-like.
"La'Mara," Christian whispered, moving up behind her and gently trying to pull her away. "Shouldn't we be running?"

"No. We shouldn't." La'Mara whispered back as she got to her feet with Christians help. "The only place to run is the direction of the village where there are a lot more people, and the minute we try he could easily crush us under a foot and the program would be reset." In reality...sort of, holodeck and all that, they were really the only hope for the villagers to stay alive. It was just one of those rare things.
"What are you whispering about?!"
"Whispering? Well, just asking one another if we've reached our expiration date. Wouldn't want you to eat something rotten now." La'Mara said to the cyclops as she also spoke with her hands. "Ya know how it is with rotten food. Eat some then you end up sick for days! Stomach ache, vomiting, headache; not to mention the irritated eye!"
La'Mara looked to Christian. "Am I right?"
As she was going to look back up, La'Mara got a look at his sandals. The were muddy and still wet. They also had an interesting marking on them. Not to mention a violet scarf was tied to one of the straps. "Did you just divert some source of water for someone?"
"Why?" The cyclops questioned suspiciously.

What? Rotten? "Well, I didn't..." Christian started, whispering. Then he thought, and kept silent for a while. Of course this was a trick to get the cyclops off their back. "Oh, yes, we're very rotten," he said, nodding vehemently. "Definitely should look for some other food." He couldn't help a slight grin, though he hoped the cyclops didn't notice it.
The question about the diverted water puzzled him. When the cyclops asked why La'Mara asked, Christian said: "I was wondering that as well."

"Well it's just that your sandals are wet and muddy, and there's a scarf around one of them." La'Mara thought for a brief moment. They had smelled lamb. That was not eaten unless it was a special occasion. Special occasion also means lots of people which means lots of drink. Hold on.
"Let me guess. A woman you love is getting married and you are trying to crash the wedding by getting rid of the water supply," La'Mara looked at Christian. "which would also make sense if the couple in question planed a boat ride. That would mean the woman would have to stay here." Could they be dealing with a broken hearted cyclops?
"Cala." The cyclops eyes started to water. "The most wonderful woman to ever walk the earth. She's banded with the villagers to keep me out. I don't understand." The cyclops picked Christian and La'Mara up, and placed them on an open hand to sit. "She gave me the scarf in the spring."
La'Mara sat on the cyclops palm. "There is more here than meets the," La'Mara stopped before she said eye. "slew of Aphrodites temples."

Christian was genuinely surprised at La'Mara's perceptiveness. He wouldn't have come up with a correct guess about the cyclops' wet feet even if he had all the time from whatever year BC they were in to the present to think about it! "La'Mara?" he asked the Captain. "Have you ran this programme before or are you just very sensitive to people's problems?" If it were the latter, he knew she'd make a good Captain. And I've got a lot to learn from her.
Then the cyclops went off into a stream of words about his beloved. Christian found it repulsive rather than touching. I feel bad for thinking this as my autist self doesn't make me any better than him, but I can sort of understand why she'd prefer her husband over him. He didn't say so, instead remaining silent for La'Mara's diplomacy to handle the matter.

"La'Mara?"
La'Mara turned her head and looked at Christian. A question was coming no doubt. Either that or a comment. "Yes?" La'Mara briefly looked down. Man alive were they high up! If they tied a rope to the cyclops thumb they could go bungee jumping! Whoo! Looking back up she smiled at Christian.
"Have you ran this programme before or are you just very sensitive to people's problems?"
"No. I haven't. Though I did throw in Greek Mythical characters and what have you along with the real historical things of this era. The program is actually designed so you don't know what to expect; kinda like real life. I love surprises! As far as being sensitive to other peoples problems, I'm not sure. Generally people tell me I talk too much or get too excited, but I do like to listen to people too..."
La'Mara turned her attention back to the cyclops. "Well, you aren't going to get any answers by eating people. Why don't we go to the party? Then maybe we could all just sit down and talk, or you and Cala can talk in private, while we distract everyone else."
The cyclops thought for a moment. "Fine. But no tricks."
La'Mara raised her hand. "No tricks. I promise, but you have to promise not to run off with Cala. I know I wouldn't like to be hijacked."
He agreed, and now they were off to the village. "This is quite a spectacular view from up here, don't you think?"

"No tricks," said the cyclops. La'Mara promised him that no tricks would be played. "Do you mean that?" he whispered in her ear, leaning in close so that the cyclops wouldn't hear. "Do you think we can trust him?" If she was going to play a bardic trick, he'd rather know beforehand. Gave him the certainty and calm he needed.
Christian looked over the edge of the moving hand. "Er..." he said, looking down. "I think I'd rather keep my eyes set on the distant horizon." He did so, and saw the village draw nearer and nearer. "How big do you think his strides are?" he asked La'Mara out of pure curiosity. "Look at the holes he's making in the ground where he puts his feet down? Do you think he made a pond when he stepped out of that stream?"

"Of course I meant it." La'Mara whispered back. "We're still traveling bards as far as everyone is concerned though. But I do think we can trust him." She looked straight at Christian. "Just put yourself in his sandals. Grief stricken, torn heart, torn soul, lost love. True as far as he is concerned. He was only acting the only way he knew how, and also his actions, while not exactly condoned are because of unrequited love; at least as far as we know. But we will distract people if need be. We are on our way to be peacemakers...sort of." La'Mara said as she took Christian's hand in hers.
Before La'Mara could answer the other questions they were at the village where a lot of yelling, running, and rock tossing were taking place. The rocks were being pelted at the cyclops. La'Mara stood up. "Hey! You wanna watch it! What good will it do to make someone his size angry? You really think those are going to kill him?"
La'Mara ran off the cyclops hand, and leapt to a rope at the top of the building, using it to slide all the way down to the ground. What a rush!
"Look. We come in peace. All he wants to do is just talk to Cala. He loves her so she isn't going to be harmed. And if you want your water back I suggest letting them have a word."
"Only five minutes!" The head villager went and brought back Cala. She was in a violet dress with gold. She had long nut brown hair and green eyes. "Deo." Cala sounded surprised, and happy at the same time. "I thought you were dead."
Deo, the cyclops put Christian on the ground so the two could go off and talk. "What did she mean when she thought he was dead?" La'Mara wondered out loud.
