Cadfael frowned, and spoke his mind directly. "I wonder, though," he said with a grin at Mirax. "Which capital? After all, each city-state is sort of its own capital." Besides, the murder had been committed on the station. "Well, Ambassador, you know the diplomatic code," he said, venturing a suggestion. "We could always pay our friends in D'medi a courtesy call, see what we find out."
A light flashed on a terminal in the runabout's control centre. "By the way," he asked. "Not that it's any of my business, but doesn't that mean our arrival at this planet I call 'Machiavelli' is imminent?"

Cadfael had been listening to the discussion unfolding, slightly bemused at the animosity between the diplomat and the intelligence officer. They were more alike than they realised or perhaps cared to admit, Cadfael thought with a smile and a nod: both dealed in information, and both had to keep it secret to make it count. But somehow, he didn't think that breaking these things to Mirax wouldn't help. Nor would Woods, now irritably getting coffee to get away from the diplomat. Oh, the joy of being a simple bartender...
He decided to keep it at that and act as if he were absorbed in the report on the three or four dozen city-states that dominated the planet they were going to. It was a puzzle: a complex, political puzzle. He liked that, and although he didn't like the murder, being an Angosian who despised violence, he did much like the implications. Oh, the old fool that I am at times... Cadfael got up and walked over to the replicator. "Angosian Cream Tea, Hot," he ordered. The soothing beverage in his hand, he went over to where Mirax was sitting.
"Well, Mirax," he said to her. "I've got some time to read over the report. I must say, we're really up for a puzzle. To take all the 49 other city-states on the planet and search them one by one, we'd be needing a lot of time!" He chuckled.

"The Blood"
Since that diplomat from the Most Serene Republic of D'medi had been very clearly assassinated on Delta One, Cadfael had been involved from day one at Art's very special request with the investigation being conducted by Commander Woods and Lieutenant Wilson. At the moment, the bartender had left his bar for a multiple-day away mission on the USS Chakotay, one of Delta One's two runabouts. Accompanied by a Security detail, they were to find out who in the planet's complex political framework had seen fit to assassinate the D'medi diplomat.
He looked at Ambassador Mirax, Commander Woods and Lieutenant Wilson, who were in various positions and at various stations on the runabout. "Well, guess we're going to have to chart Planet Machiavelli..." he said pleasantly, giving them a smile. "Good you brought a barkeeper! We'll probably be needing a lot of drinks before we found out what happened to that diplomat..."

"Not really. In my line of work I need to read people, and the stories those too are telling with their eyes and body language say plenty. Personal feelings aside, it makes since for the commander and his first officer to have dinner in order to relax a little around one another. Working that close to someone is bound to create tension or friction, to the layman's eye they are simply getting to know one another, but to the trained eye it looks as though they have fallen for each other and don't know it yet..."
Cadfael threw Jethro an understanding smile. So I have a second opinion that says the two of them might make a fine couple, he thought. "Oh, knowing Art, he'll be 'not knowing' for quite some time," he commented. "He enjoys being single too much to decide he's found the woman of his life with overnight. Although I must say, it keeps coming back from the two of them ever since I met Art on the Kirk." Not to mention Commander Milos is evidently in love with Arthur.
Jethro asked for Brandy. "Well, I think I've got that," said Cadfael, pouring a brandy for the Intelligence Officer and a scotch for himself. "Here you go. Your health, sir."

A bourbon? Cadfael sure had whiskey, but Bourbon... "Well, if you're referring to a controlled origin in North America," he said. "No, I don't think so. But I do have good Scotch imported from Earth." He saw the Intelligence Officer look at Arthur and Celeste, and threw him a meaningful glance. "Surprising isn't it, by the way," he asked, "that our Commander immediately has dinner with his First Officer?"

She misses the point completely... "No, no, no," he said chuckling, making it clear that Arthur's number one had misunderstood. "I meant that Arthur is only human like the rest of us. I can tell you, he has some..." Just as he was about to say that Arthur had some flaws, the Commanding Officer came running into the pub as if he were being chased and made straight for the bar, telling both of them that he was late for dinner. He looked at Celestia with a 'proves my point'-look.
He pointed the two towards a table by the window, already decked and equipped with this week's menu. It was a bit sparse: Rathr Fish and Chips was probably the most exotic of them, and even that didn't differ much from the British dishes he had imitated. Of course, he could also replicate the Earth equivalents, but he much rather made something special. "I'll be joining you two soon." Best to leave those two alone for a bit.
He went to deal with the man in casual outfit, although he had a Starfleet commbadge that gave him away as one of the Station's officers. He had seen him before, so he was probably part of Art's senior staff. "Good evening," he said. "Can I get you something?"

Cadfael just nodded with a smile when she told him about Arthur's invite. "I promise. I won't tell even if it means my life. And...potential is one of many words I'd say sticks to Arthur. Just like: fun, sweet, smart, dashing, one of a kind ...heart breaker." She really heaped on the praise. It was really serious, Cadfael observed. "Whoa, Commander," he said laughing. "He is human, you know."

Cadfael laughed heartily. "That's not too strange," he joked. "Considering that telling a replicator a secret and telling it to keep it, if it were programmed to do so, would be a waste of space. Better they enhance it so it can make better meals." The bartender wanted to ask Celestia something, speaking of that. "Speaking of meals," he said with a smile. "Our Commander will be sampling some of our fine pub food tonight."
"Do I still have to play twenty questions to find out if Arthur said anything more about me?" Cadfael started laughing gently. "My dear girl," he said like an old man speaking to his granddaughter would. "You're in it head over heel! Well then, since he is clearly on your mind..."
He leaned in closer and lowered his voice. "He has told me a lot about you. How you're nice, friendly and also somewhat pretty. Don't tell him I told you, but there might be potential." Even though our Commander may be a casanova, and he has spoken fondly of many girls he thought, laughing to himself. None have been so persistent both in his praise as in their pursuit as Celestia Milos. Or so I gather... Who knows? He might even be tempted to attempt to create a couple, whether Art liked his doing so or not.

"Now that you speak of it," said Cadfael pleasantly, still with the straight face so typical of what on 21st-century Earth was known as 'British humour'. "I've never seen a replicator betray a secret, either. Perhaps that's why they're used so much."
He looked at Celestia's glass. "Like the drink?"

She quite freely admitted her crush on her Commanding Officer. Arthur wouldn't mind, probably. He might drop a few hints but surely not enough for his friend to find out the truth about Celestia's feelings towards him. "My dear girl, my next question is, who do you think I am?" he asked rhetorically with a straight face, but in a joking manner. "One, I was a diplomat: I know how to keep a secret, as I deal in information. Second, did you ever meet a bartender who betrayed you?" He added hastily: "Well, apart from a Ferengi, of course!"

Were it not that you would probably not like me to do so literally, Cadfael reflected with a smile as he poured the ale before resuming the cnversation, I'd say you have a crush on our dashing young Commander. The pub owner decided to play some mind games by stating hypothetical scenarios: it was a diplomatic trick. "What if I told you he had?" he asked. "Would you be happy?"
"Here you go, by the way," he said, quite happily giving Arthur's friend the half pint of ale. "A half pint of the first local Delta Quadrant ale in the Galaxy." He wondered what she thought of it.

"Remember what Arthur said?" Cadfael asked pleasantly after the Executive Officer revealed she was startled. "From his description, you might rightly describe me as a bit eccentric." He chuckled. "My apologies, though. I didn't mean to," he said gentlemanly.
"Um, as far as a drink: surprise me. I'm always up for an adventure or something new."
Ah, I'm glad! Arthur exclaimed inwardly, as he started to smile. "Just the person I was looking for! Art told me that you were a woman for strange," he said, but then apparently had second thoughts about offering her the Aroma Ale. "Although I don't know if that includes drinking green-coloured ale made out of alien plants from Rathr." He laughed pleasantly. Although I must admit it tastes right good, I already observed the colour. It might scare the lady.

Cadfael emerged from the room behind the bar with a big smile on his face: he had just brewn the first ever local ale originating from the Delta Quadrant. The only thing he now had to do was change the colouring from that distasteful pale green to a more normal shade, but it was a delicious, fruity beer with Rathren aromas. He'd call it "Aroma Ale". He was also in the progress of brewing a darker, more Guinness-like beer he'd call "Delta Drought", for the real connaisseur.
He saw Lieutenant-Commander Milos and sneaked up on her. "Back already, Commander?" he said politely, with a chuckle. "What can I offer you? It's on the house."

Cadfael thanked Lieutenant Browning and any others for their compliments.
Before Cadfael could answer the question of information on Celestia's 'certain person', he heard Lieutenant Wilson stumble and looked at the Security Chief. My, my. This station is full of surprises! Cadfael thought enthusiastically. A Cyborg officer with a malfunctioning eye? It may have sounded like something eccentric, but there is one on Delta One. I'm impressed with Arthur's eye to put together such a varied crew. He looked amusedly at the reunion of Magnus and Celestia, wondering what feelings were involved.
For that matter, he wondered what feelings Celestia had for Arthur. Or he could be wrong, but not bloody likely: he saw the way she looked at him and that question just sounded suspicious. "If you are talking about our dashing young Commander, Miss Milos," he said pleasantly to her, "I can tell you all you want." He chuckled.
Arthur suggested that they continue their tour. "Oh, go ahead, Commander," he said, chuckling. "An old man like me shouldn't keep you from your tour, far be it from me to hinder your briefing schedules! I can manage; I hope to see you in my pub some time."

I see the way you look at him, so I don't think that is a likely scenario. But no, I think not. Although I must say he'll probably enjoy dinner with you.
Do you think my pub will be a success?
