"Captain, recommend going to one third impulse and approaching slowly."
"Agreed. Slow to one third impulse."
No shields, no weapons, unknown design. It had to be first contact because of the unknown design. If Voyager had encountered them then, it would show up on sensors who they were. I hope they aren't injured... That'd not be too go for a start. Especially if it was bad and their species knew where to find them. Wait...there was no distress call. So that could not be the case.
They then received a hail, and Commander Hughes put it on screen. It was in-fact a species that La'Mara had never seen or heard about. They were suppose to seek out new life; part of the Starfleet directive. This was in fact new life.
"Greetings, Federation vessel," "My name is Yenos, Guide of the Vessel Ruo'do. What brings you to Rathren space?"
Wait. Did he just say Federation vessel? That was...unexpected.
"I'm Captain La'Mara Tiho of the Orion, nice to meet you Yenos." La'Mara said calmly and with a smile as she stood from her chair. "I apologize for intruding on Rathren space. We were looking to make a way into the Delta Quadrant from the Alpha Quadrant when we unexpectedly got sucked through a very unstable wormhole that spat us out here."
La'Mara paused a moment.
"I'm curious, you identified us as a Federation vessel. Have you come across another Federation vessel of some sort?"
As far as La'Mara knew they were the only Federation ship here, and they were not in Voyagers records.

The face of Guide Yenos remained still, and he made another sniffing sound as if to be certain of his sense of smell. He listened patiently to the Captain, then responded. "There is no need for an apology," he said, dismissing the Captain's concern. "When we first picked up your scent, you did not show any hostile intent. The wormhole explains why you are a long way from home, Tiho Guide of the Orion." He paused. "But it seems like fate has brought our vessels together. It seems fitting that as we've got to know the scent of your quadrant, you're now getting to know ours."
He looked around him, sniffing again, then looked patiently back into the camera.

"Agreed. Slow to one third impulse."
"Acknowledged" With that Larkin slowed the ship smoothly so that you almost would not be able to tell they slowed at all, call him grumpy, call him old, call him bald, call him down, there is many things he has been called, but above all others was one hell of a pilot and that he was. Larking piloted the ship cautiously toward the rathren ship especially since they knew who we were and we sadly knew nothing of them.

"There is no need for an apology,"
Well that is a huge relief. Still, it was somewhat protocal to apologize. Diplomacy didn't work all the time, but on rare occassions it did. So far this was one of those occassions. Hopefully, this race that seemed nice didn't have something up their sleeve. Tiho couldn't help being that way; cautious and a tad bit skeptical. Maybe it had to do with age more so than anything.

"But it seems like fate has brought our vessels together. It seems fitting that as we've got to know the scent of your quadrant, you're now getting to know ours."
"So it does." I wonder... "We've picked up four planets on sensors. One of them has two moons, could you tell us please, is that where your species resides?" La'Mara asked politely with a friendly tone. About them having been in their quadrant, well, if they got to continue chatting it would be something La'Mara would address. How could a species enter the Alpha Quadrant from the Delta and not be known by any of the natives?

The Captain asked about their home planet. One would have expected the Rathren to nod, but his face remaioned still and unmoving. "You are right, it is the Planet Rathr," he told the Captain. "You are welcome to travel there and trade with us, if you wish." He sniffed around again, then looked at the screen again. "We would be honoured to escort you."

Larkin watched the view screen and wished there was telepath here so would could know what they were really thinking. More often than not when it came to meeting new races if they seemed to friendly to be true they were. He was not cynical, well ok maybe a little. Still though cynical or not he was cautious and he thought these guys seemed a little too friendly. Perhaps it was because they have no shields and no weapons and knew that they were out classed either way, until proven otherwise he would remained skeptical of these aliens.

Well we now have a name to enter into the log. Should help the science officers.
"You are welcome to travel there and trade with us, if you wish." "We would be honoured to escort you."
La'Mara looked back at Commander Hughes and the rest of the crew just to see if they thought it was a good idea. She thought Commander Hughes would think it was a good idea considering what had been said in her ready room. In the end it was still her decision. It sounded good to her. Hopefully not too good to be true. La'Mara looked back to the screen with a smile.
"Thank you very much. The honor would be ours."

Mishtak listened to each officer's conversations, not focusing on any but picking up bits and pieces here and there. He chuckled to himself when Larkin mentioned making the ship dance to a Klingon Opera...
The captain returned and asked for a status report, he stood from the chair and moved back to his position at tactical while the other members of the bridge crew filled her in.
"Tactical is back up and running..."
More happened, planets detected,a ship appeared on the scanners, but before he could alert the captain of it's presence the Ops officer did so, causing Mishtak to growl slightly. He ran a full sensor sweep of the vessel, they had no records of it and was about to inform his commanding officers when once again Ops spoke up,Mishtak began wondering why he was even here if Ops was going to do all the work, then remembered if anything did happen his console was the only one capable of firing the weapons manually, should something go wrong with the systems again.
Alert status was decided, once again without his input and then the screen came to life with the alien greeting them in a way that expressed prior knowledge of the federation.
"Captain, it would seem they know of us. Even if we know nothing about them." He said this quietly so that only the captain and first officer could hear him.
He then ran another system diagnostic, and prepared to power shields and weapons should the command be given, he also set several predesignated coordinates into the system so that if he was so ordered all he needed to do was hit one button and the ships defenses would flare to life while firing the first barrage in order to give the orion time to orient itself to whatever the situation would call for.
The aliens then said something about scent and invited to escort the Orion to their planet, Mishtak's senses were on alert but this was the crews first time in a first contact scenario, so he kept his thoughts and doubts to himself. It seemed the captain was going to take them upon the offer and follow them to their home world for 'trading'.
Mishtak remained on guard, watching his screens for any variation in the other vessels weapons or shields...

"You heard the Captain, Commander," Christian told the helmsman as the man on the screen waited patiently to escort them. "Lay in a course towards the planet Rathr, and engage the engines at your discretion." As the ship started moving, the figure of Guide Yenos on the viewscreen nodded, looked around to the sound of sniffing on his bridge, and then said: "We'll follow you at our maximum speed."

"Aye Commander, moving at full impulse towards Rathr Sir." He said his fingers expertly dancing along the console once more imputing speed, vector, and trajectory into the consoles data receptors. Looks like there will be an away team after all. He could not wait, with an away team he would be able to tell if these aliens for genuine in there kindness or if there was something more sinister at work in their agenda. Larkin cracked his knuckles and leaned back in his chair. He bet the captains chair was comfy, it looked more comfy. Nice and cushioned he wanted a captains chair, not the position, he will gain that in time, just their beautiful comfortable chair.

Did I miss something? Them follow us to their home? Sounds backwards to me... La'Mara thought as she gave a nod to their alien friend then looked over her shoulder, and gave a signal to cut the channel and turn the view screen off. "Perhaps we should match their maximum speed seeing as we know not how fast they can go." La'Mara said as she sat back down. Just so others could voice their own opinions La'Mara asked: "What do you think about them so far?"

"What do you think about them so far?"
"Well Captain going off of most, not all, but most reports I have read from the Voyager and her crew, they did not stumble across many friendlies in the years they were here. I do not trust them Captain and I believe this could be a ploy. However with that said Captain they could be genuine, a rare oddity of kindness in an otherwise hostile environ. I would advise extream caution and wearing Phasors when we depart the Orion."
He riddled off his concerned one by one to the Captain and anyone else that was in range to hear. He looked at his Captain wondering what she thought of his words and what or how she would respond with, would he be dismissed as xenophobic or would his cautions be noted and listened to, or even more so, agreed with. He waited patiently and looked into her eyes awaiting her reply.

"What do you think about them so far?"
Mishtak was still being cautious, it was extremely rare that an escort should follow their escortee...

I do not trust them Captain and I believe this could be a ploy. However with that said Captain they could be genuine, a rare oddity of kindness in an otherwise hostile environ. I would advise extreme caution and wearing Phasers when we depart the Orion."
"I agree with Commander Reinhardt, we should exercise great caution in dealing with them. It is unusual for an escort vessel to follow, I do not trust them...
Captain Prince probably would have said something to the affect of him not trusting anyone, but she was no longer here and he did not know enough about their new captain to know if she'd take his security precautions seriously. He had served aboard a number of vessels where the captains threw caution to the wind, it never really worked out all that well, but it was their call in the end.
"... and I recommend that security personnel be put on alert status..."
Looking at Larkin
"...I do not think arming the entire crew will be necessary at this time, but I think any away team going down should have an armed security escort just in case."
Even if he did agree with Larkin about the phasers, he didn't think having everyone armed from the start would make a good first impression during this first contact and it might be construed as hostility if they arrived as guests fully armed. 'How would we feel if they came aboard fully armed?' he asked himself...

Christian did not see any threat as he appraised the conversation with Guide Yenos. He felt that the Guide seemed more reasonable than both of his colleagues gave him credit for. One had to be on one's guard in a first contact situation, but these aliens seemed benevolent. "You don't seem to trust them, Lieutenant," he said to Mishtak. "I get a feeling we can trust them. They quite willingly invited us over, and they seemed to imply they have been in the Alpha Quadrant."
He was curious about the implications of some of the Guide's remarks. If it was all true, there had to be a way for the Rathren to get to the Alpha Quadrant. In that case, maybe they'd find more than supplies waiting for them on Rathr. "I recommend caution in showing ourselves to be either hostile or vigilant," he said. "We don't know much about them, but they seem to know about us. If we don't manage to upset them, they might share with us knowledge that can help us return home."
"I recommend the standard security precautions for away teams, Captain," he concluded. "Let's return their show of goodwill."
