"Understood." La'Mara first replied back to Ensign Harper before she joined in the conversation about what her officers thought about this new race thus far. She listened to each of them as they voiced their opinions, keeping an open mind as best she could. Naturally she had her own opinion forming. A plus and minus list. It was just in her nature to balance everything out; of course not knowing everything about them made it a tad difficult.
"To be honest with you all something does not sit entirely right with me." Tiho admitted. "I don't think putting the ship on alert is necessary at the moment, and I also don't think anyone going down to the planet should have a security escort, but I do think every member should at least have a phaser and tricorder." La'Mara looked to Hughes. "Since they identified us as a Federation vessel, and have been to the Alpha Quadrant then they must know that it is regulation...standerd procedure, as you said. But I still want anyone going down to advise caution."

"Well then Captain I think we need to decide on an away team. I think these aliens are just TOO friendly. Not even alien races in the Alpha are that friendly. It is a note of concern that their following us to their planet. There is a few warning alarms going off in my head about this whole situation Captain. I don't want to come as xenophobic because I am not, I like aliens all the same as the next person, I am just saying perhaps exercising extream caution might be the most prudent thing to do here"
"I get a feeling we can trust them. They quite willingly invited us over, and they seemed to imply they have been in the Alpha Quadrant."
"Commander that is exactly why I do not trust them, they say they have been to the alpha quadrant before yet I looked for them in the database while taking us toward their planet and they are not there. Then there is the fact that they are all to willing to allow us to come to their planet, it could be an elaborate trap. We all saw what the sensors showed, no weapons, no shields, their vessel could be on its last legs and they could want ours, full power, and a hell of an array of armored hull, torpedoes, and phasor bank arrays. This does not bode well in my stomach, its just this gut instinct, perhaps its nothing, perhaps I am paranoid, perhaps I am not..." Larkin let the implication of his last words sink in for whatever possible weight they would have.

"I don't know about that Mister Reinhardt. The Betazoids are pretty friendly, welcoming people." Tiho said with a bit of a playful smirk. She was of course drawing on a specific memory. The host that got married, wed a Betazoid. The wedding had been pretty spectacular as well as the honeymoon. Come to think of it... Not now!
"They would not be in the database if we have not encountered them before. It is possible for species or even certain people to know about you before even meeting you. Trust me on that one. Or you could just coin the phrase 'oh I heard all about you'."

"Captain I am just saying, we need to be cautious, something hear does it smell right. I can't put my nose on it but...well...something is...simply odd. I know not what, but there is something odd about these people and decidedly suspicious how they have heard of us and been to Alpha quadrant and not a single Federation Vessel documented or logged the experience. Maybe they do know of us, maybe they have engaged the Federation in combat and destroyed our vessel so as to be no survivors. This could all be a very convincing masquerade, after all Captain I once heard someone say we all where masks, perhaps this is theirs." Larkin said casually.
"They would not be in the database if we have not encountered them before. It is possible for species or even certain people to know about you before even meeting you. Trust me on that one. Or you could just coin the phrase 'oh I heard all about you'."
Larkin in response looked at Captain Tiho for what seemed to be a long minute, looking into her eyes, his own seemed slightly less sad then when he last bared them down upon her. He held his hands in front of him so she could see, then clasped them together. He then looked around at the bridge crew and noticed how many eyes were on him, the then tore his hands apart from one another and made an explosion sound with his mouth as he mimed the ship exploding. He thought to himself and decided that was about how much he trusted these aliens.

La'Mara could feel Jix personality start to merge with hers just a little bit, which was a bad thing seeing as how he was a hot headed idealistic person with a very short fuse. It was a wonder how he had enough patience to just teach martial arts, much less be around people. La'Mara took a breath. Settle down...
"They are putting their best foot forward as far as we know, so we are going to do the same." La'Mara stated as calmly as possible. "Caution is advised as always. If they had engaged in battle we still would have heard something. When a ship is destroyed Starfleet never just says 'oh where did they go?' they look into it. And as all cultures they have a different way of doing things. Different can be scary at times because people don't want to leave their comfort zones."

"Yes Captain. Whatever your orders I will follow them Captain." He said noticing that he ruffled her feathers. That is something that he did not want to do. So he tried to put on a smile, it looked awkward seeing as how he was not really feeling the need to smile at this time but he wanted to keep things cordial.
He looked around the room with his eyes ad then once more looked back to his Captain. He clasped his hands once more on a resting position in his lap and waited for the Captain or any other member of the bridge crew to respond. He took in a deep breath, then exhaled slowly, but subtly so as not to seem frazzled.

Post by Lt. JG Lisa Huygens on Mar 23, 2011 15:31:49 GMT -5
Lisa had looked with interest as the conversation unfolded, noticing several things the others hadn't. The fact that the Guide sniffed a lot and told them he'd smelled them before made her wonder if this species didn't have a very strong sense of smell that was used for more than just picking up the scent of flowers. The fact that the Rathren seemed to either see no need to converse (or at least verbally) intrigued her.
She was a bit annoyed at what she perceived to be Commander Reinhardt's knee-jerk, cynical and paranoid attitude towards an unknown species. She could understand that people were afraid of new things, especially if they seemed to know about you while you didn't know them and they showed no sign of emotion as they spoke to you. Both intrigued her, whereas they put Commander Reinhardt off.
She decided to speak up on the side of Christian and the Captain. "Perhaps it is just me and my scientific mindset," she said respectfully, "but I think that when we don't know anything about a species, our right course of action would be inquiry. There are a lot of questions, but they shouldn't put us off: we should consider them all the more reason to engage with them, especially if they offer us peaceful engagement." She paused. "I, for one, have a hypothesis about why they know us while we haven't made contact yet, and I'd like to test it."
"The Captain is right," she said. "Safety precautions, yes. But no scepticism is warranted until they show us any sign of ill-intent."

La'Mara looked to Lieutenant Huygens when the young woman spoke. She had a very good point. And a hypothesis already? That was quite impressive. At least she earned her position on the ship. Some officers well...
"I'd love to hear more what you think lieutenant." La'Mara said, already deciding that Huygens should be one of the people to beam down to the planet. The girl was good!

Lisa continued to explain her hypothesis to the Captain, glad that her Commanding Officer was at least open to her idea.
"Haven't you all noticed?" she asked them rhetorically. "He said on several occasions that the Rathren had picked up our scent earlier. Additionally, his large nose and his several audible sniffing noises seem to suggest to me that his species could have a good sense of smell. They might have smelled us and come close to us without making contact, deeming it unnecessary."
"The implications are far-stretching, Captain," she concluded. "They've been to our Quadrant. If we find out how, we could be home quite sooner than anyone expected. Besides, I'd love to test my hypothesis." She was quite eagerly awaiting arrival at Rathr.

La'Mara carefully, and patiently listened to the assistant chief science officer. It did not seem such a far fetched idea. The young girl had been quite observant. La'Mara slightly tilted her head. She could be onto something. "Sounds a reasonable deduction." Lightly tapping her chin La'Mara looked to Commander Hughes with a 'what do you think?' glance. "Helm, put us in a high orbit when we reach Rather." La'Mara said to Larkin. They should be there rather soon.

"Helm, put us in a high orbit when we reach Rather." La'Mara said to Larkin.
"Aye Captain, adjusting course." His fingers click rapidly on the console and the only indication that the ship was altered is the ascension up from the view screen. He stayed facing his console. He looked at it to avoid the gazes of his superior officers. He shook his head. What else could he do.
(OOC:On a side note I feel like Larkin is being teamed up on just because he is being incredibly cautious of an incredibly suspicious situation. The only other character that is even remotely to my line of thinking in this matter is the guy that plays Mishtak. We have reports from Voyager right? I remember watching it. In the seven years they were there they truly did not encounter that many friendlies. So here we are going blindly fourth to the very first seemingly friendly Alien species? It seems incredibly illogical to me that we would not be significantly more guarded.)

Christian had listened to Lisa's hypothesis with interest, and he agreed. "Good thinking, Lisa," he said, congratulating his friend. "Let's see how it works out." Just a few moments before the Captain gave her that 'what do you think'-look, he was looking at the viewscreen as the planet came into view. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Captain Tiho try to attract his attention, which caused him to look in her direction with a start. She was giving him a look that asked him what he thought.
"I think that now we have orbit," he began, "we should wait for the Rathren to send us coordinates to beam down to and assemble an away team. I think you and Lieutenant Mishtak should go in any case, so that means I'll have to stay on board, no matter how curious I am about the Rathren myself. While you're down there, we can make ourselves useful by collecting data on the planet."
Lieutenant Francis responded at lightning speed to a bleeping noise coming over from Ops. "Captain," he said. "The Ru'odo is sending us the transporter coordinates now, with the compliments of Guide Yenos."
Christian looked at the Captain with a 'you know what that means'-look.

(OOC: In my honest opinion, I do believe Larkin's assessment is a bit off. There have been plenty of Voyager episodes where they were trading with a people. Not all people were malicious, certainly not: I'd say most conflicts in episodes where they trade arise from culture shock and unfamiliarity with local customs.)

Mishtak had not worked with Larkin very often, as he had been off duty for personal reasons, but now Mishtak was sensing that Larking would have made an excellent security officer if he hadn't chosen to become a pilot...
He was being over cautious, and Mishtak liked that, but the difference between them was that Mishtak's overconfidence came from his job ensuring the safety of all crew members and he didn't know Larkin well enough to ascertain where his motives stemmed from. Mishtak decided that on off duty hours he would invite Larkin for a drink and get to know him better.
The captain was willing to trust them, and the science department seemed to have a theory to test, the only theory Mishtak had at this point is that it could be a trap, and if you stab a Rathren it'll probably bleed...
...besides, you never know when a humanoid race will change into some kind of giant bug and try to eat you...
He shivered slightly at that memory before returning to watch his console and listen to further discussions...
He was going to say something when the planet came on the view screen... Course was adjusted, orbit set and preparations for an away team began.
"we should wait for the Rathren to send us coordinates to beam down to and assemble an away team. I think you and Lieutenant Mishtak should go in any case."
"I wold like to request at least one other security officer be on the away team..."
so that means I'll have to stay on board, no matter how curious I am about the Rathren myself. While you're down there, we can make ourselves useful by collecting data on the planet.
He wanted to object to the captain going and was about to quote starfleet regulations regarding the prohibition of a captain entering a potentially hostile environment, but then it also stated the captain was the best person to engage in a first contact situation. His hands were tied on that matter.
"...I would also request that Commander Reinhardt be placed on the away team, he may be able to learn of other friendly races and their coordinates while we are on the surface."
He didn't know how Larkin would react to that request, but he'd personally rather have the senior navigator learning coordinates than anyone else, no matter how good Faith had proved herself to be.
"Captain, The Ru'odo is sending us the transporter coordinates now, with the compliments of Guide Yenos."
...Showtime as the old Earth saying goes, yes, he had been doing his homework on antiquated Earth catch phrases, mainly so he could understand half of what Sharpay was saying in their daily verbal sparring matches...

After listening to each member that had an opinion to voice, La'Mara swirled a few things around in her mind. Although, before she could really say anything things happened 1...2...3. So, not many orders needed to be handed out. It was almost like getting three of the same bars on a gambling machine. If things were successful with this species then that would be when the money would pour out.
Away team members... La'Mara stood from her chair. "Lieutenant Mishtak, Commander Reinhardt, Lieutenant Huygens, you're with me." So are a few other people. La'Mara tapped her badge. "Tiho to Lieutenant Xena, meet me in transpoter room two. You're beaming down as part of the away team." La'Mara then looked to Lisa. "If you'd like you may bring another officer from your department along to help assist if you feel it nessacary."
La'Mara then went toward the turolift. "Looks like the ship is your commander, for the time being."
"Let's go." Tiho stepped into the lift and waited for the members of the away team to join her.

Christian was not surprised by the composition of the away team. Lisa had a hypothesis to test, Mishtak had been suggested by him and the Klingon himself had brought Larkin along for the ride. The Captain formally handed over control of the ship to him as she went towards the turbolift. "Give my regards to the Rathren, ma'am," he said with a grin on his face as he took the centre chair.
Let's see what we can find out. He tapped a few buttons on his console to call replacements for the away team members on the Bridge.
